Properties of Hydraulic fluid:

1. Viscosity:
 Viscosity of a lubricant is defined as the resisting property to its flow.
 Viscosity of hydraulic fluid should be low.
 Ideal Viscosity.
2. Volatility:
 When oil is exposed to a high temperature for a long time, it may evaporate.
This property is called as volatility.
 Volatility of hydraulic fluid should be low.
3. Neutralisation Number:
 The neutralisation number of hydraulic oil denotes its degree of acidity or
alkalinity.
 The neutralisation number of hydraulic oils should be between neutral and 0.1.
4. Lubricity:
 It is the ability of a lubricant to reduce friction and wear.
 The lubricity of hydraulic fluid should be good.
 It should lubricate all moving parts.
5. Demulsibility:
 Demulsibility is a property of the hydraulic fluid to separate rapidly from
moisture.
 The hydraulic fluid should resist emulsification.
6. Toxicity:
 The hydraulic fluid should be non-toxic.
7. Fire Resistance:
 Fire resistance of hydraulic fluid should be high.
 The flash point and fire point of hydraulic fluid should be high.
8. Density:
 The density of hydraulic fluid should be low.
9. Chemical stability:
 The hydraulic fluid should be always chemically stable.
 It should not react with parts of the hydraulic system.
 The chemical stability of hydraulic fluid should be high.
10. Oxidation Stability:
 It is the ability of hydraulic oil to resist oxidation.
 The hydraulic oil should have high oxidation stability.
11. Heat transfer Capacity:
 The hydraulic fluid should have good heat transfer capacity.
 It should dissipate the heat produced by moving parts.
12. Foam Resistance:
 The hydraulic fluid should have good foam resistance.
13. Rust Prevention:
 The hydraulic fluid should prevent the formation of rusts.
