TUTORIAL # 3 (Chapter 2)

Q1. The baggage truck A has a mass of 800 kg and

is used to pull each of the 300-kg cars. If the
tractive force F on the truck is = 480 N,
determine:

a) The initial acceleration of the truck.

b) Forces in coupling B and C.
c) What is the acceleration of the truck if the
coupling at C suddenly fails?

The car wheels are free to roll. Neglect the mass of the wheels.

(Ans. (a) a = 0.343 m/s2,(b)TB =205.6 N,TC=102.9N,(c) a = 0.436 m/s2)

Q2. The speed of the 17.5-kN sports car is plotted over the
30-s time period. Determine the traction force F acting
on the car needed to cause the motion at t = 5 s and t =
20 s,

(Ans. F5= 3.211 kN, F20=535 N)

Q3.The winding drum D is drawing in the cable at an

accelerated rate of 5 m/s2. Determine the cable tension
if the suspended crate has a mass of 800 kg.

(Ans. T = 4.92 kN)

Q4. The coefficient of static friction between the flat bed

of the truck and the crate it carries is 0.30. Determine
he minimum stopping distance s which the truck
can have from a speed of 70 km/h with constant
deceleration if the crate is not to slip forward.

( Ans. s = 64.3 m)
Q5. The elevator E has a mass of 500 kg and the counter weight
at A has a mass of 150 kg. If the motor supplies a constant
force of 5 kN on the cable at B, determine the speed of the
elevator in t = 3 s starting from rest. Neglect the mass of the
pulleys and cable.

(Ans. vE = 7.23 m/s)

Q6. If the crest of the hill has a radius of curvature ρ = 60

m determine the maximum constant speed at which
the car can travel over it without leaving the surface of
the road. Neglect the size of the car in the calculation.
The car has a weight of 17.5.kN.

( Ans. v = 24.26 m/s)

Q7. When crossing an intersection, a. motorcyclist

encounters the sight bump or crown caused by
the intersecting road, if the crest of the bump has a
radius of curvature ρ = 15 m, determine the
maximum constant speed at which he can travel
without leaving the surface of the road, Neglect the
size of the motorcycle and rider in the calculation.
The rider and his motorcycle have a total weight of
2250 N.

( Ans. v = 12.13 m/s)

Q8. The motion of a 2-kg block B in a horizontal plane is

defined by the relations r = 3t2 – t3 and θ = 2t2, where r is
expressed in metres, t in seconds, and θ in radians.
Determine the radial and transverse components of the
force exerted on the block when (a) t = 0, (b) t = 1s.

( Ans. (a) Fr = 12N, Fθ=0, (b) Fr = -64 N, Fθ = 64 N)

Q9. Slider C has a mass of 2OO g and may move
in a slot cut in. arm AB, which rotates at the constant
rate θ·o = 12 rad/s in a horizontal plane. The slider is
attached to a spring of constant k = 36 N/m, which is
unstretched when r = 0. Knowing that the slider
passes through the position r = 400 mm with a radial
velocity vr = +1.8 m/s. determine at that instant:

a) The radial and transverse components of its

acceleration,
b) Its acceleration relative to arm.
c) The horizontal force exerted on the slider
by arm AB.

( Ans. (a) ar = - 72 m/s, aθ = 43.2 m/s , (b) -14.40 m/s2), (c) 8.64 N)
