PROTECTIVE FINISHES

Protective finish is a common name given to a thin covering and a protection to a


surface which in turn gives an improved appearance. This will enhance the life of
the surface and could be removed, restored and recoated whenever necessary.

 Protective finishes can be divided as


 Seals
 Polishes
 Wax
 Paints
 Varnishes
 Lacquers

 seals

Seals are finishes applied to a surface to protect, against direct effect of abrasions
from soils, grease etc. Seals are semi permanent when applied and will remain on
the surface for several years and can be restored and recoated easily. Seals are
more durable and more resistant to soil and stains compared with polish.

Seals can be divided as solvent based and water based seals.

 Prevent entry of dirt and soil into the floor


 Increase life of floor by eliminating direct wear.
 Protect floor from chemicals.
 Reduce dust.
 Increase ease at work, and reduce costs of routine maintenance.
 Improve appearance and long lasting

 Polishes (liquid or cream)

Polish is also semi permanent covering and is found in many


different colours. Such as red, brown, and black. It is applied on
coloured surfaces and on coloured cement floors. The surface
should be free of dust and cleaned before application. The
method of application will depend on the type of surface, whether
it has been previously polished, and if so, it must be stripped off if
,necessary only.

 Are relatively cheap
 It is a semi permanent finishes
 Protect the surface by preventing the entry of dirt,
soil, grease etc.
 Increase the lifespan of the surface
 Improve appearance
 Adjust the slip resistance of a floor
 Reduce cost of cleaning

Points to observed when preparing a floor for application of polish

 If a floor has not previously been polished or a further coat of polish is to be


applied, all dirt, grease and oil must be removed by mopping or scrubbing
with a neutral or alkaline detergent depending on the amount of soil.
 If previous coats of polish are not completely removed then as far as
possible a compatible polish must be used.
