Tips to Avoid the Freshman 15

1. Get a mini fridge. Getting a mini fridge will let you store foods
like yogurt, cheese, hummus, carrots, water and other perishable
items.
2. Get a microwave. There are many healthy quick foods you can
make in a microwave. Enjoy a movie night popcorn or start your
day with oatmeal.
3. Snack Smart. Stock your dorm room with healthy snacks to
avoid unhealthy foods. Great snacks include jerky, apples, peanut
butter, nuts, whole grain cereal, and dried fruit.
4. Don’t skip breakfast. Having a nutritious breakfast provides
energy to your brain that increases academic performance. Eating
protein in the morning to offset hunger later in the day.
5. Don’t be scared of the cafeteria. There are many options that
will be presented in the cafeteria. Try to eat foods that are baked,
broiled, steamed, grilled, or roasted. Most dining halls should have
a salad bar that offers a variety of vegetables. Remember that
everything is okay in moderation!
6. Drink smart. Students age 21+ can enjoy alcohol. Women can
consume 1-2 alcoholic beverages per day and men can consumer
2-3 per day. When drinking alcohol, choose a light beer and avoid
drinks that are sweetened with fruit juice. To avoid extra calories,
alternate each drink with a glass of water. Don’t forget to eat
before drinking! Food can absorb alcohol in the stomach and curb
late night cravings.
7. Exercise. Most colleges have a gym on campus. Exercise helps
release endorphins and reduce cortisol levels which can decrease
your stress levels. Try to exercise 4-5 days a week for at least 1
hour.
