Cursor 9L Camshaft and Phonic Wheel Timing for Exhaust Brake equipped camshaft.

Camshaft with last three digits of the part number of “209” indicates Exhaust Brake
equipped camshaft. (See page 2 for location of this part number)

Single Mark
Double Mark D Hole
A, B, C Holes
54 degrees BTDC

Engine rotation is counter clockwise when looking at the flywheel.

Engine firing order is 1 - 4 - 2 - 6 - 3 - 5.

Note: The A, B, C, D is not marked on the flywheel. The Flywheel is marked with three single marks and
one double mark.

Reference Mark Engine position

A TDC: 3 & 4 cylinder

B TDC: 1 & 6 cylinder

C TDC: 2 & 5 cylinder

D 54° before TDC

Correct crankshaft position for the start of this procedure.

Rotate the crankshaft until the "B" Mark for 1 & 6 (first single mark after Double Mark when turning
engine Counter Clockwise) is viewed through the window in the bottom of the flywheel housing, pin the
flywheel through the crankshaft sensor hole as shown above. Cylinder 1 & 6 are now at TDC.

Installing the camshaft or checking camshaft position. With engine positioned at 1&6 TDC. Remove the
cover on the front (fan end) of the camshaft. When properly installed (engine firing on #1 cylinder) the
camshaft should be positioned as shown above. Blank hole at 12 o’clock, drilled and threaded holes at
9 and 12 o’clock, and last 3 digits of cam part number at 6 o’clock.

Gear position for “wide” gear housing Gear position for “narrow” gear housing

Install the camshaft gear; verify the camshaft gear is orientated as shown above. Position the camshaft
gear so the slotted holes are close to centered.

Install the four camshaft gear retaining bolts and tighten (bolts do not need to be tightened to specified
torque at this time as adjustments may be needed).

Install rocker arm assembly tighten rocker arm assembly to specified torque.

Start of Camshaft Timing Procedure

1) With the engine positioned at #1 cylinder TDC firing, proceed as follows:

2) Rotate engine Clockwise (CW) until the "D" hole (hole with two notches) passes the window in
the bottom of the flywheel housing. Continue to rotate the engine CW until the next single
notch “C” 2/5, appears in the window. Lock the flywheel through the crankshaft sensor hole
using tool 380000150. Use a paint stick and paint the 2/5 single mark for easy reference for the
remainder of this process.

3) Now rotate the engine Counterclockwise (CCW) one full revolution back to the 2/5 single mark
to start the timing procedure.

To assure you are positioned correctly on #2 cylinder firing, both intake and exhaust valve bridges
should be loose and valve bridges on #5 cylinder should be tight.

pg. 3
4) Install a dial indicator on the #3 exhaust valve rocker arm roller as shown.

5) Loosen #3 exhaust valve adjusting screw lock nut. Tighten adjusting screw to remove all lash,
plus one additional turn.

6) Preload the dial indicator 6.0 mm.

7) Zero the dial indicator.

8) Rotate the engine CCW, 1 & ¼ revolutions to the ”D” hole (the hole with two notches) 54
Degrees BTDC. Pin the flywheel.

9) Camshaft lift should read 5.29 mm + or – 0.09mm or (0.208 inch + or – 0.003 inch). If camshaft
lift is correct continue to Step 11.

10) If Camshaft lift is out of specification it will require a reset. Remove the pin from the flywheel.
Move the flywheel in the direction necessary to achieve 5.29 mm or (0.208 inch) on the dial
indicator. (experience has shown that increasing the lift setting slightly to 5.36mm during the
reset procedure may help to avoid multiple resets to achieve 5.29 mm)

With lift reset, loosen the camshaft gear retaining bolts (less than finger tight). Carefully move the
flywheel back to the ”D” hole (the hole with two notches) 54 Degrees BTDC. Turning the flywheel in
the normal direction of engine rotation CCW to remove any gear backlash. Make sure the dial
indicator reading does not change during this procedure. If indicator reading changed, two things
may have occurred. Bolts may still be too tight or you may have run out of travel in the slots,
requiring gear to be re-centered.

NOTE: If during your reset you have moved past the 54 Degree mark (turning engine CCW). Turn the
engine CW until you pass the 54 Degree mark by two holes. Then turn flywheel CCW to 54 Degree
mark. You are correctly positioned, with gear backlash removed. Pin the flywheel.
Make sure the dial indicator reading does not change during this procedure.

pg. 4
11) Torque camshaft bolts to specification 25 Nm plus 45 Degrees (18 lb.ft. plus 45 Degrees)

12) Remove the pin from the flywheel, Turn flywheel CW 2 holes past 54 degree mark and stop,
(this is done to remove gear train backlash).

13) Now turn flywheel CCW back to 54 degree mark and pin flywheel. Camshaft lift should now read
5.29 mm or (0.208 inch).

14) Loosen (back off) #3 exhaust rocker adjusting screw tightened in Step 5.

15) Check and set all valve lash using the correct procedure.

16) When valve lash check and set is completed, rotate the engine CCW 2 full revolutions to assure
all procedures have been completed correctly, and pistons are not contacting the intake or
exhaust valves.

pg. 5
Phonic Wheel Timing

With the engine positioned at TDC firing on #1 cylinder proceed as follows:

1) Turn engine clockwise until double mark ”D” hole (the hole with two notches) 54 Degrees BTDC
is viewed in the window at the bottom of the flywheel housing. Go past the double notch two
holes. Now turn the engine CCW, returning to double notch and pin the flywheel.

2) Insert the phonic wheel timing fork 380000151 through the cam sensor hole, with the flywheel
locked in the "D" position (the hole with two notches) 54 Degrees BTDC. Install the phonic wheel
so the timing fork engages the phonic wheel tooth with the "^" mark. Tighten the phonic wheel
retaining bolts to the specified torque.

pg. 6
Adjust the valves

The valves for each cylinder can only be adjusted when the piston is at TDC firing. Rotate the engine
counterclockwise to the "B" hole (the first hole after the hole with the double mark). To assure TDC
firing on #1. Rockers should be loose on #1 cylinder and tight on #6 cylinder. Use the timing pin to lock
the flywheel. You can now adjust the valves on cylinder #1. Use the following chart to adjust remaining
valves. Rotate engine Counter clockwise (as viewed from the flywheel), 120 degrees to the next single
mark, to accomplish the next lash setting in sequence. Continue sequence until all valves have been set.
