OPC Desktop Historian

For manufacturers who need to analyze process data, OPC Desktop Historian is an affordable, easy
to install, configure and administer data archiving tool. Unlike enterprise process historians that are
designed to manage the needs of the entire corporation, OPC Desktop Historian focuses on data
collection, not data presentation or processing. OPC Desktop Historian is a lightweight solution for
time-based data storage that can stand alone or become part of a total enterprise data historian
solution.

MatrikonOPC Desktop Historian newest features include:

• The maximum number of returned values for HDA requests is now configurable. This feature
will help administrators to control the maximum load an OPC client can place on the
historian.
• Real time data system: Fast access to latest values
• Supports input of historical data through the OPC HDA server (insert, replace, and
insert/replace)
• Strings supported
• Throughput up to 28,000 points/1,000ms
• Controlling how much raw data an aggregate calculation retrieves to complete the
requested calculation is now configurable. This feature can help mitigate the effects of bad
quality data on the results of their aggregate calculations.
• The Backup and Restore tool is included, both through the Backup Tool GUI and the
command line.

• Rolling Buffer Storage Engine (FF7R) has

been added to Desktop Historian. The
Desktop Historian
• provides up to 4 GB (232) byte data files
for the
• Long Term Storage (FF7) file format.
• The Storage Engine Configuration panel
for the FF4 format now provides
feedback on how much hard drive space
is available to store rolling buffer files.
• Timestamp Processing:
o Enables user to configure offsets
(time differences) for incoming
timestamps (the time that data
was collected); Desktop Historian
(ODH) will record the modified
timestamp.
• ODH can be configured to use its current system time for data time stamps rather than the
time reported by the OPC data source.
• Tag Lifetime
o Enables tags that rarely change to be updated and recorded to disk.
o Lifetime periods from 100ms to 42 days
o Async or Sync read interfaces
• File Collector
o Intelligently reads data from files and writes data to an HDA server; supports
monitoring multiple directories.
o Enables configuration of post processing actions for failed files (e.g. failed files can
be moved to another directory or deleted after the processing attempt is complete).
o Result logging: enables the recording of a success or fail status of each attempt to
parse files (read and understand files).
• Live File Management for Continuous Storage Mechanism Enables older data files to be
moved or deleted during runtime.
• Easily and seamlessly archive process data and use it to optimize operations through
analysis and reporting.

The MatrikonOPC Desktop Historian is:

• A powerful historian for the price of
an OPC HDA driver!
• Easily Configurable
• Easy to deploy
• OPC DA and OPC HDA Compliant
A stand-alone application with
visualization tools or become part of
a bigger solution. Its scalability
allows it to fit into every process
control environment, large or small.

Typical Applications within a High

Speed Data Collection model:
• Rolling Buffer Mode: Loop
performance analysis and tuning,
short term historical monitoring,
store and forward and more.
• Continuous Storage Mode: Long term
process analysis, process tracking
and more

Visualization Tools:
OPC Desktop Historian comes with a visualization tool that allows you to create dynamic,
interactive graphical trends featuring real-time and historical plant information. As well, an Excel
plug-in is included that allows you to automatically transfer data from any OPC HDA or DA server
to Excel for data analysis in a familiar environment. OPC Desktop
Historian will also interface with any OPC-compliant visualization tool you may need to use or are
currently using.
Quick & Easy to Use:
OPC Desktop Historian installs quickly and easily. It is ideal for those who need to archive process
data but don’t have the time, resources and money required to implement an enterprise process
historian. Click-Select-Collect!
