VACANCY – Child Psychologist/Counsellor

The Maa Trust (TMT) is a non-profit community trust in the Maasai Mara undertaking sustainable
development projects in partnership with wildlife conservancies. It is seeking a fully trained and
accredited CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST of COUNSELLOR to work with vulnerable children in the Maasai
Mara. One of the programmes coordinated by The Maa Trust is a scholarship programme, which supports
severely disadvantaged children through primary and secondary school. Many of these children have
experienced trauma and abuse, including FGM, child marriage, child labour and child pregnancy, that
they do not know how to process. The child psychologist / counsellor will work with the scholarship
children as well as five local schools to provide psychological support to Maasai children.

Reporting to: Education and Skills Manager, TMT CEO and the Board of Trustees

Key Responsibilities:
SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT SUPPORT (50%)
 Keep in regular communication with the 50 children in the scholarship programme
 Coordinate weekly group/individual counselling sessions for primary school children in the
programme
 Provide intensive psychological support during the conservation holiday clubs three times per year
 Coordinate family counselling and reconciliation sessions during school holidays where necessary
 Coordinate with social services, children’s services and local administrative leaders
 Provide secondary trauma support for staff working intensively with the scholarship students
SCHOOL COUNSELLING AND SUPPORT (25%)
 Coordinate weekly counselling sessions at five local primary and secondary schools

CHILD RIGHTS P ROGRAMME (25%)


 Support The Maa Trust’s child rights programme aiming to prevent child abuse through:
 Mother-daughter, father-son forums
 Child stakeholder workshops
 Alternative rites of passage programme
 SRH education campaign

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
 Bachelor’ Degree in Psychology or Counselling
 Minimum 2 years similar experience
 Certified with KCPA professional body
 Strong interest, experience and skills in counselling traumatised children
 Proven ability to form a therapeutic alliance
 Proven ability to work with families under stress
 Fluent in spoken Maa
