So, as we have seen last session, the course on the past and present tenses, this time we are
going to look at the use of the future
So, we have:
Future Simple Future continuous
I will listen I will be listening
Future Perfect Future Perfect Continuous
I will have listened I will have been listening

Let’s start step by step with the future simple:

1- Using the present continuous to express a future plan/ arrangement already made
 Tomorrow, I am giving a presentation to the board.
2- You can use “be going to” to talk about future plans
 I am going to advertise the vacancy on the paper.
-Talk about a prediction based on some evidence
 We’ve got the new plans for the office. It is going to look great.
 Clients are not going to come to us if our fees are too expensive.
PS. Use the present continuous when you have arrangements clearly made (time and/or place
indicators used)
 I am getting on the plane to Brussels tomorrow at 7.00 am and Jan is meeting me at the
airport.

3- Use “will” to refer to the future:
- To make a prediction based on a personal opinion
 We probably won’t get next year’s budget on time.
- To do something while speaking about it
 Sorry I’m a bit busy. I’ll call you back later.

- To talk about future facts


 The company will be 100 years old in September.
- Make prediction with expect and think
 A: Do you think we will reach our target?
B: I expect we will
PS: Sometime “shall” is used as an alternative to will
 I shall be late to the meeting. = I will be late
 Shall I look at it later?
4- Using the simple present to talk about the future:
-To talk about schedules
 The meeting starts at 9:30.
After when, until, before, after, as soon as, once =to express future
 I’ll let you know as soon as he arrives.
 When you leave, please turn off the lights
Now, move to task 2. We will apply what we have learnt so far.
Now, back to the course let’s look at the future continuous
5- Use the future continuous: going through reports

-action in progress with a specific time in the future


 I’ll be going through the files this afternoon now This afternoon Future

-talk about future place (same meaning as going to)


 I’ll be meeting the new team later this month (I’m going to meet)
6- Use the future perfect:
- Action that the speaker predicts it happen before a precise point in time
 I’ll have written the report by 2pm. finish writing the report

- “by” to show when you expect the action to end


now 2 pm Future
 By the end of the year, net profits will have risen
Now go to task 3 and try to formulate the sentences in the correct tense

Ok, now as you finished those tasks, there are some expressions used to express the future, let’s
take a look:
-Be/ seem+ likely/unlikely + to infinitive
 Economic recovery is likely to happen slowly.
 Interest rates seem unlikely to rise over the coming year
-Be about+ to = s.thg that will happen very soon
 The company is about to launch a new robot.
-Be due+ to = s.thg that will happen at a particular time
 Several companies are due to announce their bankruptcy next month
- Be supposed+ to =s.thg intended to happen / s.one intends to do something
 They are supposed to announce their bankruptcy next month.
-Be expected+ to= s.thg likely to happen
 Transport costs are expected to rise next year
-Be set+ to = the conditions now mean that s.thg will probably happen
 Frankfurt airport is set to become the largest airport ever.
