Generally there is no any way to calculate the preheat temperature in welding however, some

approaches about it have been developed. Welding method, procedure, thermal conductivity
coefficient, workpiece thickness and the carbon equivalent are the substantial factors affecting the
preheat temperature. Whether some ideas deny the carbon equivalent term, it is main factor having
profound effect on brittle phases in the materials.
preheat temperature may be calculated according to formula below:

Preheat temperature in Degree celcius = 350 * Square root of (C.E - 0.25 )

Where C.E = CC + CT
CT = CC * 0.005 * T
T = thickness of plate in mm
CC = C + Mn/6 + Ni+Cu/15 + Cr+Mo+V/5

In some operations this formula may give higher results than the needed but that formula may be
arranged as;

(350*square root of (C.E-0.25))-50 = Actual preheat temperature
