Tasks/learning: Today was the very first boxing class I went to. I began by first meeting with
my mentor and they gave me a liability waiver before I began, while my mentor gave me a brief
summary of what the class would be like. After this, my mentor loaned me a pair of handwraps
and taught me how to wrap my hands properly. My mentor made it clear that there is not one
way to wrap your hands, but most methods are similar. I struggled at first to keep my fingers
apart when wrapping them, if they are together, they will get squished and blood circulation
could be cut off. Next, my mentor showed me the three punches that the instructor would be
giving during the class: the jab, hook and uppercut. My mentor explained that I shouldn’t just be
hitting with my arms, but I should be pivoting my feet and hips. Next I grabbed a pair of boxing
gloves and the warm up began. The warm up consisted of getting the shoulders and arms relaxed.
This first class was me getting the hang of punching with the gloves, while also using proper
technique and form. For example, when throwing a jab, you have to make sure that your wrist is
pointing down and elbows aren’t locked. While doing this, you have to pivot your foot and hips
when throwing in order to bring more power into it. When throwing a hook, you turn your wrist
to the inside and make sure you have your elbows slightly bent. You also have to pivot. When
throwing an uppercut, you point your wrist towards yourself and pivot your foot and hips. From
this first class, throwing an uppercut was the hardest for myself since the punches weren’t really
flowing, but this was my first class so I shouldn’t be expecting too much. The hardest part of the
class was keeping up with the combos that the instructor was calling out. After the class, I
finished with an impact score of 86,601*, which is a combination of how much force I was
hitting the bag with and how many impacts I was making per minute.

Plan for next work session: After the class, my fingers hurt and my shoulders and arms were
sore. So, for my next class I will be concerned with wrapping my hands better.
*impact score is a combination of how many impacts per minute and the force when it hits the bag*

Tasks/learning: This was my second class and it was also the first time I had to wrap my hands
myself. I had it correctly wrapped, however I don’t think I wrapped them tight enough to provide
enough protection. The class began with a quick warmup consisting of squats, shadow boxing,
and jumping rope. When the warmup was over, i had to quickly put my gloves on since this was
a 10 round class and there were only 30 second breaks in between each round. The first combo
was a pyramid jab exercise, where we start with 1 then do 2 then 3 etc., all the way to 4. My
mentor pointed out that I was using my arms too much and I needed to pivot my feet and hips
more. After this correction, the punches started to flow more and I didn’t need to exert as much
energy in my arms. The next round combo was a hook-cross-jab-cross-hook. For the first two
minutes I focused on my form, rather than speed. As soon as I felt comfortable, I started moving
faster and punching harder. The next combo was a jab-cross-slip-cross. A slip is where you move
your head out of the centerline by dropping your shoulder in order to avoid a punch. When doing
this combo, the slip slowed my momentum down, but I was able to gather strength for the cross.
The rounds alternated these three combos. We finished with intervals, which tired out my
shoulders and arms. Afterwards, my fingers hurt, which was due to the way I wrapped my hands,
so next class I will work on that.

Plan for next work session: Wrap my hands better and work on my slips.

Tasks/learning: I began by wrapping my hands, as always, but I decided to ask my mentor how
to wrap them correctly since my fingers were hurting after the last class. My problem was that I
wasn’t separating my fingers enough, so they were getting bunched up when they were in the
gloves. We began with a simple warm-up: jump rope, squats, lunges, shadow boxing. This class
focused on rolling into a punch. Rolling is when you drop your head and pivot one step to the
right or left. So, the first combo was a jab-cross-roll-cross. When rolling, it is important to set
your feet correctly so you can transition better into a punch.

Tasks/learning: During this week, all classes were focused on our hooks, or more importantly,
keeping our hands up and not punching at an angle. We started with a basic warmup consisting
of squats, jumping jacks, arm stretches, shadow boxing. After this we started the first round with
a 3 hit combo: jab-cross-hook. The instructor emphasized keeping our hands up to protect our
guard and to keep pacing ourselves. The next round we started with a hook combo. This is where
it became important to not hit at an angle so our punches would flow smoother and faster. I
started becoming tired by round 5, which is only half way through the class. To combat this I
began pacing myself better by throwing more punches without as much force. The following
rounds followed the same hook combo and we finished with an ab-cool down.

Plan for next work session: From what I've been shown through my final scores, it is clear that
I’m improving by throwing more punches, since my average impact scores were the same. I will
focus on not starting off so fast next time so I will not become tired early on.

Tasks/learning: We started with a quick 4 minute warmup with the usual exercises: squats,
jumping jacks, arm stretches, shadow boxing. The first round focused on our jabs with the
“pyramid” jabs. We would start with one jab, then two, then three, etc, until we reached 6 jabs
total, then reset to one. This tired my arms out quickly, but I had to keep my hands up and
continue. We continued to focus on our jabs in the following rounds, our combos consisted of
jabs, slips and rolls because the jab transitions well into slips and rolls. One example is the
jab-slip-cross-hook-cross. At first this combo was hard to follow since I felt that the slip was
messing with my flow, but after a while, I learned that it was because I wasn’t moving my head
enough to gain momentum for the hook. After moving my head more, it became easier to pivot
my foot and shoulder to hit the bag harder. Lastly, we finished with the ab cool down.

Plan for next work session: Hopefully, I will be able to return next week to work again. From
these scores it is clear that hitting the bag as much as possible will yield a higher impact score,
since my session with more impacts gave me a score higher by more than 20,000 points. For next
session I will work harder to try to punch more to reach 100,000.

Tasks/learning: For this class, I was focused on getting more hits per round so I could get a
minimum score of 100,000. We did our usual warm up consisting of jumping jacks, squats,
lunges, shadow boxing. Next we started off with a quick 3 hit combo: jab cross hook. It was
optional to roll in between the hook and next jab so we can transition better. For this class, we
were working on our slips, so the next combo was jab-cross-slip-cross-hook. Compared to my
previous class, it was much easier to utilize the slip to gain momentum for the cross. We
repeated this until the final round when we did intervals, where we would spend about 30 secs
straight doing one type of punch. This tired my arms quickly, but in order to get a score of 100k i
had to keep going. We finished with an ab cool down. After this class, my hands started hurting
and I realized that my knuckles were bruised and the skin was starting to fall off. I talked to my
mentor, who told me that it was because when i started getting tired, my hands and punches
started falling at a downward angle. My hands were dragging, so he told me he would show me
how to wrap my hands for my next class.

Plan for next work session: Wrap my hands better, reach 110,000 points.

Tasks/learning: Give details on exactly what you did during this time frame. Specify any

It has been a little over two weeks since i have worked on my project, so i'm not expecting the
best results. Not only have I not been working out, but I haven't been to any of the classes. I
arrived and began wrapping my hands, taking the advice from my mentor to prevent damage to
my hands. He emphasized not putting so much padding on the knuckles since they would be the
first to hit the bag, and to not curl my fingers so much in the gloves. We began with our usual
warm-up, which made me tired. We got into the first combo, which was jab-cross-hook. I
noticed I was getting tired, so i switched from most hits to making sure my form was good ie. not
dropping my hands, not dragging my hands, and hitting the bag straight on rather than at an
angle. We continued to round two, the combo was a jab-cross-uppercut-cross, which was an easy
and fast combo to follow. The next combo was focusing on attacking the body: jab-cross-body
cross-cross-right hook. The body cross requires you to get lower to punch the body, rather than
punching downward. At first, the body cross was messing up my flow, but I found it even harder
to throw 3 right punches in a row. After a few minutes, I felt a lot better about the speed and how
to throw them, so I started to speed up. We alternated between these and intervals until the end.
By the end, my fingers weren’t hurting, so I knew that I wrapped my hand correctly.

Tasks/Learning: After earning a low impact score at my previous class, my focus was to try to
get back on track and get at least 100k. I started by wrapping my hands carefully, to make sure
that my knuckles wouldn’t have so much padding. We started with the warmup then the usual
first combo: jab-cross-hook-cross. These classes were going to focus on using the hook, as well
as rolling or slipping into punches. So, the next combo was cross-slip-cross-hook-cross. After
taking a few seconds to make sure I was using proper form: pivoting my whole body going into a
punch, I was able to speed it up and roll into the combo without stopping. Since i had a goal, it
was important to not take any breaks during each round. The next combo was
jab-hook-jab-cross-hook. It was easy to follow this combo since the punches flowed very
smoothly and there were no pauses between them. Then we finished with intervals, where it was
starting to become difficult to consistently hit the bag due to fatigue.

Plan for next work session: Since i was able to earn 100k points during both of these classes,
my next goal is to earn 120k.

Tasks/Learning: Since I already got 120k points, I decided to set my goal at 150k. This would
be achieved by consistently hitting the bag without stopping. I could do this by pivoting and
gaining momentum for each punch. The class began with the warmup, which stretched and
prepared me for the class. This class featured a lot of fast and high impact combos which allowed
me to continiously hit the bag without rest in between. The rounds were broken up into intervals,
where each round focused solely on jab, hook, cross, etc.

Plan for next work session: I was closs to getting 150k, but I started slacking during rounds 3
and 4. If i want to get 150k i need to keep the rounds consistent.

Tasks/learning: For this class, I finished with an impact score of 143,990 in 10 rounds. I began
with wrapping my hands as usual and grabbing the same pair of gloves I use. For the warmup we
did forward and reverse lunges and did a couple squats. This wore out my legs, which was a
slight problem since I use my whole body while boxing. The round began and our first combo
was a jab-cross-slip-cross. This is a very easy combo and allows me to build up a good score for
the first round. Next we worked on a jab cross hook cross, which is where I ran into my first
problem. Last class, I uppercut incorrectly and it slightly injured my wrist. When I was throwing
my hook, it became a lot more noticable, so my plan was to re-wrap my hands at the end of this
round, in order to provide more support in my wrists. This fixed my problem and for the rest of
the class, my hands were fine. My next problem was my pacing for this class. This was my first
10 round class in a while, so I was used to 8 rounds. Because there are two extra rounds, I would
have to keep the same pace, which means I have to push myself more in order to achieve the
same pace as my 8 round classes. After this realization after round 7, I decided to hit the bag
faster and with less force in order to achieve a score of 150,000.

Plan for next work session: I was close to getting 150k, but the combos had slips and rolls
which stop my flow for a bit, especially when we have to do them in between punches. If i want
150k, i should focus on more impacts, rather than a higher force.
