INTRODUCTION

This module has been designed for the students of La Universidad


Autónoma del Caribe, who have the opportunity to study English
through the virtual campus.

The module is divided into three units for students at pre-intermediate


level, it provides practice in all four communication skills: reading,
listening, speaking and writing.

It is a communicative course, that exchanges information with all the


students registered on the web, this process allows them to acquire
the language in an easy way, because it provides motivating material:
reading, conversations, activities, etc.

From the beginning, the students practice English and they use it
immediately: they ask for information, that is, they learn the
appropriate English for different situations.

The module lets the students to understand the language and later,
they are able to produce listening, writing, reading and speaking
connected to the virtual teacher through the web and the different ways
of communication and technology.

Every unit of the module contains conversation, grammar, activities,
reading, vocabulary and listening which are developed in a variety of
exercises that practice basic linguistic functions

This unit will allow students to interact to establish personal


relationship, to express their ideas about the following topics:habitual
actions and routines, possession, possibility, clothes and accessories,

parts of the house, and people’s appearance.

1.3.1. Formation of the third person singular (she- he- it).

A. Most verbs take –s. Example: She works

B. Verbs ending in -ss, - sh , -ch, -x, -o take -es

Example: She watches - He does..

C. Verbs ending in a consonant + -y, drop the -y and take -ies.

Example: she studies.

The present simple is used:

A. For events that happen regularly.

Example: they go the supermarket on Saturday.

B. For events that are always the same.

Example: Helen works at a hospital.

4.5. Formation of -ing

A. Most verbs take -ing Example: speak = speaking

B. Verbs ending in -e, drop the -e and add -ing. Example: dance = dancing

C. Verbs with one syllable ending in a vowel + a consonant, double the consonant
and add – ing. Example: cut =cutting

D. Verbs ending in – ie, change the –ie to -y and add –ing

Example: __________die - dying__

The present progressive is used:

A. For actions that are happening at the moment of speaking.

Example: I’m busy. I study my math lesson.

B. For temporary states.

Example: She is taking a driving course this week.

C. For future actions.

Example: She is having a party next Friday.

The future will is used:

A. To predict, usually with the verbs think and believe.

Example: I think my son will be a good engineer in five years.

B. To offer one self.

Example: Don’t worry; I’ll take care of your children.

C. To express warnings and threats.

Example: Get away or I will tell the truth.

D. To express promises

Example: I promise, I’ll give you a candy.

E. To express requests

Example: Will you do me a favor?
