To measure the arterial blood pressure using ausculatory method

Principle:
A cloth-covered bag, wrapped around upper arm, is
inflated with air til higher extra arterial pressure occludes the brachial artery.
the pressure in the bag is then gradually reduced and balanced against intra-
arterial pressure. the reading for systolic and diastolic blood pressure is then
observed.

Requirement:

Apparatus:
 Stethoscope

 Sphygmomanometer
 Human object.

Procedure:

Ausculatory method:
The pressure is applied externally to the artery and
the blood pressure is determined by listening to the arterial sound called
‘Korotkoff” sounds with the help of stethoscope
Wrap the pressure cuff
Palpate the brachial artery on the medial side of ante-cubital fossa.
Place the diaphragm of the stethoscope below the cuff and over the brachial
artery, where it branches into radial and ulnar arteries
Inflate the cuff above the systolic blood pressure reading, so that the artery is
completely collapsed and no sounds are heard

.
Reduce the pressure in the cuff by turning the valve counter clockwise
slowly. As the pressure decreases you will be able to hear four phases of
sound changes. let all the air out of the cuff, allow the subject to rest, and
then take another reading.
Take three readings and calculate the average.

Precautions:
Each and every step of performance should be discussed with
subject prior to the procedure.
Zero error of sphygmomanometer should be corrected.
The inflatable rubber bag along with its tubing should be placed over the
inner side of arm.
Do not leave the cuff inflated for more than two minutes.
The muscle of the arm should not be contracted during determination of
blood pressure.
Place the cuff 3cm above the cubital fossa.
Classification of blood pressure for adults:
Observations and calculations:

Result:
The average blood pressure measured through ausculatory
method is ____________/ ______________mmHg
