Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of this “let’s move” issue of BABYBUG.

1. Kim and Carrots: The concept of big and little comes
naturally to very young children. In fact, a toddler’s first way
of arranging objects by size is not to line them up in a series
from tallest to shortest, but to put them in pairs of big and
little. Help your child watch for “big and little” as you turn the
pages of this issue of BABYBUG. Kim spots big and little ducks.
“Bicycle Baby” and “Bedtime” also show a comforting and
familiar example: little ones cared for by bigger adults. You
can play a bigger-or-smaller game almost
anywhere. Ask your child, “What do you
see that’s bigger than you?” “What
do you see that’s smaller?”
2. Choo-Choo: Karen Dugan’s delightful artwork shows
toddlers immersed in make-believe. It’s fortunate that
pretending is such a favorite pastime of young children
because they learn so much from it. Acting out experiences
not only helps toddlers understand them, it also supports the
representational ability needed for someday making sense of
letters and numbers.
3. Stand Up: When introduced to a new action rhyme,
children find their own ways to join in. Some imitate the
motions; others repeat the words. Both are fun—
and both are fine ways to participate.
