Prepare to Travel
You will travel to Brazil. To get ready for your trip, you will need to apply for a passport. A passport is a small
booklet that is legal proof of your citizenship. When you cross country borders, you must show your passport.

Fill out the form, and write a check for the fee of $80 to the Passport Office. Put both in an envelope, address it,
and give it to your parent.

Address the envelope to: Passport Office

Arrive In Brazil
Preparation: Write “Currency Exchange” and the exchange rate on a paper. US 1 Dollar = 5 Reais
(plural of Real). Prepare small bags with a snack and write the price of the snack on a paper. Price the
snack at about the equivalent of US$1. You might have more than one snack and let the children choose
to buy both or multiples of one.

Plane Ride: Set up chairs and pretend to take a plane trip. Discuss your destination while you are on your
flight. Talk about how far you are traveling from your city to Brasilia, the capital of Brazil (about 4,500
miles). While you are in the air, teach sample words in Portuguese. Write the words on a paper you all
can see them to use once you land.
hello – alo (a-LOH) please – por favor (poor fa-VOHR) thank
good-bye – ciao (tehau) you – obrigado (oh-bre-GAH-doh) no –
yes – sim (seem) nao (nown)

Before the plane lands, give each child their passport and $10 U.S. currency. Once the plane lands, the
children line up to go through three areas: customs, currency exchange, and street vendor. Greet each
other and use a few other words in Portuguese as you converse in these three areas.

Customs: You, the Customs Examiner, sit behind a table. Your children present their passport. The
Customs Examiner asks questions such as: What is your name? Is this your first visit to our country? Do
you have any fruit in your luggage? Are you a tourist?

The Customs Examiner writes the country name and date in each passport.

Currency Exchange: The currency in Brazil is the Real. Have each child in turn exchange US$10 for 50
reais.

Street Vendor: Sell tortilla chips in small plastic bags. Each child can use his money to purchase a snack.
Later in the week, let the child use his money to purchase lunch, a (home) movie, etc.

Nate Saint

Nate Saint was a great jungle pilot who lived his life for God. Many years ago, five brave
missionaries flew into the Amazon jungle of South America in a little yellow plane. They
were Nate Saint, Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, and Roger Youderian (u-DARE-e-
an). Most of them were fathers with children younger than you. They wanted to bring the
Good News of Jesus Christ to a fierce tribe of Indians called the Waoranis. Then,
outsiders called them Aucas (OW-kas).

The Waoranis were greatly feared by others. Their previous name “Auca” even meant
“savage.” Everyone who had gone into Waorani territory before had never returned. They
were so fierce that even the headhunters in that region were afraid of them.

Nate Saint was the seventh in a family of eight children and grew up in a small town in
Pennsylvania. At family prayer time, Nate used to pray, “Lord, show us the right way.” At
the age of seven, something happened that would change the course of his life. His brother
Sam took him for an airplane ride at a nearby airport. Later, when Nate was 10, Sam let
him take the controls. From that day on, Nate could never get enough of airplanes.

One time, Nate made a six-foot glider from a drawing he found in a magazine. He flew it
like a kite at the high school field. By the time Nate was 18, he had saved enough money to
buy a small plane to build up his flying experience. He took his brothers up for rides. All
through Nate’s life, he was guided by his love for the Lord and his love of flying.

Later, something else would come along. He knew without a doubt that he was
called by God to be a missionary to Ecuador. God’s wonderful purpose for Nate
Saint’s life would combine all three—when he joined Mission Aviation Fellowship.

You can learn more about Nate Saint in the book Nate Saint: On a Wing and a Prayer.

Locate, label and color Brazil. Is it mostly in the Northern or Southern
Hemisphere? The Eastern or Western Hemisphere? Can you locate and identify the
countries and oceans bordering Brazil? What other countries can you identify?
Geography Activity

Label Brazil, other South American countries, and

the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. (Younger children
only need to label the oceans and a few
countries.)

South America Geography Game
To prepare the game: Use dimes or flat buttons for markers. The country cards will need
to be printed on two sides (or glued together) so countries only are on one side and
correct answers are on the other. Print one game board and one set of country cards for
each player. Cut apart the South America country cards. Combine each player’s cards
together to form one pile.

To play the game: Each person places a pile of markers and his game board in front of
himself. The country cards are mixed together and put in a pile in the center, with the
name only side up. The first player reads the country name
(without touching the card) and puts a marker on his board where he thinks the country
is located. Then he turns the card over secretly. (If he already has a marker on that
country, he just passes his turn.) If he placed his marker on the correct county, he shows
the other players the back of the card to verify his answer, keeps the marker on his board,
and places the card at the bottom of the card pile. The next player then takes a turn to
identify the new country card showing.

When someone is wrong, he must remove his marker, and the player to the right attempts
to place a marker correctly on his own map. Play continues with the same card until
someone correctly places his marker. Continue the game until the first person covers all
the numbers on his board or until a pre-agreed point, such as, the first person with five
markers on his board.

Hint: Before playing, look at a map of South America and review country names.

Advanced Challenge: After you have played the game a few times, you can make the
game more challenging for older students by also testing knowledge of capital cities. Some
country cards have two black dots on them, indicating the student can earn two markers
(one for location and one for naming the capital city). If the player correctly names the
capital and locates the country, he places two markers on the board instead of just one.
The winner is the player with the most markers.
