 BABYBUG is for babies who love to be read to—and for adults who love to read to them.
Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of this “big and brave” issue of BABYBUG.

1. Kim and Carrots: Toddlers are still working out
the difference between real and pretend. As Halloween
approaches, encourage your child to play with masks
in front of a mirror. Putting a mask on and taking it
off helps toddlers make the connection that people in
masks are just pretending. Here’s a homemade mask
your child can create and control, just like Kim: Tape a
tongue depressor to a paper plate. Cut large eyeholes
in the mask. Supply your child with markers, paper, and
a glue stick. Your child’s imagination will do the rest.
2. Brave Little Hippo: Little Hippo builds courage
when he feels protected. As you read this selection with
your child, point out that everyone is afraid at some
time. Children are often surprised and relieved to hear
this. If your child has a particular fear, accept it and
reassure him that it won’t always seem so frightening.
Fears are overcome one small step at a time.
3. Purple Paint: Here’s a recipe for purple paint
that’s safe on thumbs—and in mouths. Mix together
1/4 cup of powdered milk, 1 tablespoon of flour, 5 to 6
tablespoons of water, 6 drops of blue food coloring, and
6 drops of red food coloring.
