WIND
for
one
ore
several
musicians
Wind
is
a
piece
for
any
instrument
(preferably
woodwinds)
or
for
a
small
ensemble
of
any
instruments
(preferably
woodwinds).
Two
pages.
Page
one
containing
a
Melody
and
page
two
containing
melodic
Fragments
to
be
inserted
at
specific
places
of
the
Melody.
The
rests
on
page
one
can
work
in
two
ways:
a) As
articulation
points
(they
can
be
longer
than
what
the
notation
suggests).
b) As
insertion
places
for
the
Fragments
on
page
two.
Play
the
Melody
as
written
(rests
as
silences
included)
at
least
once
before
inserting
Fragments
to
it.
The
repeat
signs
mean:
repeat
many
times.
Fragments
can
be
used
alone
or
in
combination.
They
also
may
be
used
more
than
once.
It is not required to have used all available Fragments by the end of the piece.
Some
sort
of
gradation
between
short,
long,
and
very
long
durations
must
be
always
at
play,
but
it
is
not
necessary
to
follow
strictly
what
is
written.
What
is
actually
notated
in
the
score
is
a
particular
combination
of
durations,
but
the
one(s)
playing
must
keep
in
mind
that
there
are
other
possibilities.
The
overall
tempo
of
the
piece
should
be
slow
and
relaxed.
All
the
sounds
are
soft
and
with
a
minimum
of
attack.
If
performed
as
an
ensemble
piece,
performers
should
decide
individually
how
to
proceed
through
the
material
provided.
No
unified
tempo
must
be
imposed,
and
entering
and
leaving
the
piece
should
not
be
coordinated.
Stop
playing
whenever.
It
is
not
necessary
to
complete
an
iteration
of
the
Melody
to
bring
the
piece
to
an
end.
Lastly,
the
music
is
notated
in
concert
pitch.
Wind
is
dedicated
to
Evan
Ziporyn
and
Jürg
Frey,
both
clarinet
players
and
composers
with
whom
I
have
engaged
in
beautiful
and
stimulating
conversations.
