You have been learning about:
• The sounds: phonetics
• The sound system: phonology
• The structure of words: morphology
• The structure of sentences: syntax
• The meaning of words and sentences: semantics
Choose one of the topics above that you are interested and write an essay to reflect what you
have learnt.
The paper should include the following information.
I. Introduction
• General information about the topic
• Reasons why you chose the topic
II. Reflection (Body)
a) About the topic (the study)
• How do you understand about the study? (the definition, explanation, examples or
important terms in the study)
• What aspects of language do linguists learn in the study? How do they do it? (what
measurements, approaches, strategies or methods). Give explanation or examples for
your argument.
b) The reasons why you think the study is interesting
• Why do you think the study is interested? (Give 2-3 reasons and explain your
answers as well as provide some experiences or examples related to the topic)
• Do you think you would do more research about the study? Why/Why not? (What
are beneficial aspects of the study?)
• Do you think that the study is useful for English learners in general? Why?
• How do you apply the study to improve your English or support the others with their
English?
c) Challenges or difficulties while studying
• What are the challenges you face while studying this?
• What are downsides of the study?
• What lessons have you learnt regarding the application of the study into reality?
• What would you do to overcome those difficulties?
III. Conclusion
• Conclude your opinion about the topic
• What is your plan to learn or do more research about this study in the future?

RUBRICS FOR MARKING

Students need to be able to accomplish the following points to earn marks:


1. Task Achievement (TA) = how well you answer the question. (25 points)
To increase score for TA:
• present the information accurately

• answer all parts of the task


• provide a clear overview and understanding
• give a clear position, have a definite opinion
2. Coherence and Cohesion (CC) = how well is your text structured. (25 points)
To increase score for CC:
• manage paragraphing

• make sure that each paragraph has a central idea


• use linking words and cohesive devices (firstly, in contrast, thus, in my opinion, to
sum up etc)
3. Lexical Resource (LR) = how good is your vocabulary. (25 points)
To increase score for LR:
• use a wide range of vocabulary

• use less common lexical items


• avoid errors in spelling and word formation
4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA) = how good is your grammar. (25 points)
To increase score for GRA:
• use a wide range of grammatical structures and tenses

• manage punctuation
• avoid errors in sentences
