Attachment Programme Guidelines

The following guidelines should be read in conjunction with the department regulations. They

are a summarized and simplified version of the School regulations. The attachment programme

comprises of the following steps:

1. Finding an industrial attachment place: Use the appropriate letter (get from attachment

coordinator) to apply for an industrial attachment place from organisations. You are

required to keep the original and use photocopies for applications. It is far wiser to

secure attachment before the end of the penultimate semester, even though qualifying

results have not been processed.

2. When the attachment semester begins, make sure you register for attachment, leaving all

your contact details and company of attachment details with the attachment coordinator,

including the letter from your company of attachment, or the one provided by the

attachment coordinator.

3. You must have a supervisor within the organization of attachment, who will monitor

your progress, and serve as mentor and guide whilst you work. Your supervisor will also

be expected to give you challenging tasks.

4. During your attachment period, maintain a logbook detailing all your weekly activities.

Use your logbook to write out your monthly industrial attachment reports. Your report

must include the following: cover page with your details, name of organisation and

attachment duration; an introduction/summary; a description of duties carried out

during the month; a discussion or technical problems or challenges that you are asked to

solve, your (diagnostic) analysis of those problems and how you solved them; and a

conclusion. Each report should show a continuation from the previous month’s activities.

Each report must be submitted to the attachment coordinator at the end of each month.

5. You are to compile an industrial attachment report which is not just a collection of the

monthly reports. It is a report on the activities over the entire period of attachment. It is

made up of an introduction/summary (brief company background, major duties, major

challenges and suggested solutions); a main body in more detailed form than the

introduction (detailed duties/activities, challenges/problems encountered, procedure(s)

followed to solve the problems, alternatives and reasons for choice of solutions, analysis,

skills gained); conclusions and recommendations. Take into consideration the sequencing

of ideas in the whole documents and the general layout and presentation. This final

industrial attachment report is submitted towards the end of the attachment period. The

attachment coordinator will inform you of the submission dates in due course.

6. During your attachment period, you are expected to carry out an industrial project which

is of relevance to your organisation of attachment. The project is usually the

implementation of a software system. The choice of project is done in close liaison with

your supervisor. You are to document your project according to the Systems Analysis

and Design or Software Engineering methodology. The industrial project report is

submitted towards the end of the attachment period. The attachment coordinator will

inform you of the submission dates in due course.

7. At an advised date, you will be expected to make a project presentation, where you

demonstrate to the examiners a test run of your system. During the presentation, you are

to describe your system, how it works, any problems it addresses and those it does not

address, etc. Hence you are required to bring

a) A soft-copy of the system(on non-corruptible reliable media) for demonstration. To be

sure that your system will run on any system, create an executable file of your system.

b) Your project documentation

c) Your attachment report

d) Your log books
