Davisson and Germer conducted an experiment to study electron scattering on a nickel target. They observed diffraction when the target was crystallized by annealing, proving electrons behave as waves. To remove oxidation, they heated the target in nitrogen gas. This allowed them to see diffraction that was previously obscured. They then calculated the wavelength of the electrons and showed it matched the diffracted wavelength, confirming the wave nature of electrons.

Davisson and Germer wanted to study the

scattering phenomena of electrons on Nickel target.
The electrons are emitted from tungsten filament,
which is electro thermally heated up. To avoid the
interference due to air molecules, the entire
experimental setup is kept in a glass vacuum vessel.
The scattered electrons are detected by an electron
detector that is travelling on a circular track. After

they have conducted observing the scattering

phenomena for several times, the experimental
setup had some problems due to which the nickel
target was exposed to air environment. After some
time when they were about to continue the
experiment, they noticed the oxidized layer was
formed on the surface of nickel target. To avoid the
changes in the scattering phenomena due to
oxidation of Nickel target, they tried to remove the
oxidation layer. To remove the oxidation layer they
heated up the nickel target in a nitrogen gas
environment. After the successful removal of
oxidized layer, they continued the experiment. Now
they observed the diffraction phenomena, which
did not happen before the annealing of the nickel
target. They came to a conclusion that the nickel
target got crystallized and because of that the
electrons were diffracted as they have behaved
with wave nature also. To prove this they had to
show that the wavelength of the emitted electrons
