Macy's Employee Training

No one would have guessed that the small, fancy dry goods store that opened on the corner of 14th
Street and 6th Avenue in New York City in 1858 would grow to be one of the largest retailers in the world.

Macy’s, Inc. is one of the nation’s premier retailers. With fiscal 2017 sales of $24.837 billion and
approximately 130,000 employees, the company operates more than 690 department stores under the
nameplates Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, and approximately 160 specialty stores that include Bloomingdale’s
The Outlet, Bluemercury and Macy’s Backstage. Macy’s, Inc. operates stores in 44 states, the District of
Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico, as well as macys.com, bloomingdales.com and bluemercury.com.
Bloomingdale’s stores in Dubai and Kuwait are operated by Al Tayer Group LLC under license agreements.
Macy’s, Inc. has corporate offices in Cincinnati, Ohio and New York, New York.

The following summary Macy’s “Everyday Magic” employee recognition and engagement strategy,
an innovative approach to social recognition that has allowed this retail giant to cultivate a corporate
culture of recognition and appreciation as well as delivering bottom-line results.

·         Goal:  To increase Macy’s competitive advantage and profitability by connecting

employee engagement, recognition, the corporate culture, the Macy’s brand, customer
satisfaction and ultimately, the bottom-line.

·         Strategy:  Utilizing a new Magic of Macy’s Employee portal, capitalize on the
idea that the sum of all disparate individual achievements and everyday acts not only
create the Magic of Macy’s, they reinforce the brand.  Further, Macy’s Everyday Magic
goes well beyond recognition- it democratizes and empowers the workforce- ultimately
driving growth and earnings.

·         Initial Results:  Macy’s has learned that engaging and empowering employees
has proven to be more impactful than traditional recognition programs that focus only
on standout performance.

·         Next Steps: To continue to adapt and improve upon the already successful
program by focusing on the delivery of accessible and impactful tools.
