Troubleshooting the Hydraulic System

Problem List (Auto Mode)
• "The AccuGrade System will not engage in the automatic mode and the "Auto Indicator" on
the display does not turn green."

• "Poor Performance"

• "No float function"

Probable Causes (Auto Mode)

The AccuGrade System will not engage in the automatic mode and the "Auto" indicator on
the Display does not turn green.

Note: TheAccuGrade System is programmed to disengage from the "Auto" mode if the machine
implements are not moved in 60 seconds and the machine is in neutral.

1. The pilot valve is in the Lower position.

a. Return the pilot control handle to the Neutral position.

2. The parking brake is on.

a. Disengage the parking brake.

3. Electrical system fault

a. Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to check for any system faults.

Note: Refer to the "Problem List (Test Valve Mode)" for more information.

b. Check the Caterpillar Monitoring System for any system faults.

Poor Performance

Note: See "Problem List (Test Valve Mode)" for more problems that can cause poor performance.

1. Improper setting of the valve speed.

2. Improper Calibration

ReferenceRefer to Testing and Adjusting, "Linked Elevation (Dual Mast) - Calibrate" and
Testing and Adjusting, "Bank (Grade Control) - Calibrate" for more information on this
procedure.

3. Improper adjustment of the counterbalance valve

ReferenceRefer to Testing and Adjusting, "Counterbalnce Valve (Grade Control) - Test and
Adjust" for more information on this procedure.

4. The solenoid valve in the counterbalance valve is not functioning.

ReferenceRefer to Testing and Adjusting, "Counterbalnce Valve (Grade Control) - Test and
Adjust" for more information on this procedure.

5. The solenoid in the counterbalance valve has an electrical fault due to an open or a short to
ground in the circuit.

ReferenceRefer to Troubleshooting for more information on procedures for determining an

electrical fault.

6. Operating conditions are not suitable for the AccuGradeSystem.

ReferenceRefer to Operation and Maintenance, SEBU8127, "General Information" for

more information on usage of the AccuGrade System.

7. Hydraulic oil temperature is too low.

a. Warm up the machine's hydraulic oil.

8. The blade on the machine has been changed without recalibration of the counterbalance
valve and the AccuGrade System.

No float function

1. Low pilot pressure.

2. The solenoid valve in the counterbalance valve is stuck in the closed position.

Problem List (Test Valve Mode)

• "No blade function in any direction"

• "No function of the blade in a single direction of the blade tilt or no function of the blade in
a single direction of raise/lower"

• "No function of the blade in tilt left and tilt right or no function of the blade in blade raise
and blade lower"

• "The operation of the blade is slow or the operation of the blade is delayed"

• "Movement without operator input"

Probable Causes (Test Valve Mode)

Note: Refer to System Operation, "Menus" for more information about using the test valve mode.

No blade function in any direction

1. The lockout solenoid for the AccuGrade System is closed.

2. Low pilot pressure

3. Electrical system fault

a. Use ET in order to check for any system faults.

Note: Refer to the "Problem List (Test Valve Mode)" for more information.

b. Check the Caterpillar Monitoring System for any system faults.

c. Check the display for the AccuGrade System for any system faults.

No function of the blade in a single direction of the blade tilt or no function of the blade in a
single direction of raise/lower.

1. One of the solenoid valves for the lift, the lower, tilt left, and tilt right are not working.

2. Pilot resolvers or signal resolvers are leaking.

3. Electrical system fault

a. Use ET in order to check for any system faults.

No function of the blade in tilt left and tilt right or no function of the blade in blade raise and
blade lower

1. The main valve for the tilt spool is stuck or the main valve for the raise and lower spool is
stuck.

The operation of the blade is slow or the operation of the blade is delayed

Note: The maximum speed of the blade is slower when the AccuGrade System is in the test valve
mode rather than when the AccuGrade System is in manual mode.

1. The valve command from the AccuGrade System is less than 100 percent.

a. Refer to System Operation, "Menus" for more information.

2. Low pilot pressure

ReferenceRefer to Testing and Adjusting, "Pressure Reducing Valve - Test and Adjust" for
more information on this procedure.

3. Pilot resolvers or signal resolvers are leaking or failed.

4. Hydraulic oil temperature is too low.

a. Warm up the machine's hydraulic oil.

5. The pilot valve is not centered.

a. Return the pilot control handle to the Neutral position.

6. Low Hydraulic system flow

a. Check cycle times. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Cycle time check" for more
information on this procedure.

7. No or low precharge on the pilot accumulator

a. Check the charge on the nitrogen charged accumulator. Refer to Testing and
Adjusting, "Pressure Reducing Valve - Test and Adjust" for more information on this
procedure.

Movement without operator input

1. The control solenoid valve is failed or stuck in the open position.

a. Determine the bad solenoid valve and replace the bad solenoid.
