This communication can be excitatory or inhibitory depending on neurotransmitters like GABA and glutamate. Studies have found links between certain genes involved in these neurotransmitter systems and traits of ASD like social communication difficulties, learning and memory problems, and increased anxiety. Moving forward, more research is needed to better understand the genetic factors and neuronal pathways involved.
