WARM-UPS:

I start any vocal warm up with lip trills to warm up my lips, face and resonators. Then,

depending on the piece I’m working on, I’ll choose from the following warmups:

 Looeys

 Bree-Breh-Brah

 Biddies

 Water bottle pushups

 Breathing Pulsations

 Glottal closure with fingers to help

 Vah – veh – vee – voh – voo

 Doggy panting

 Tongue stretch

 Nasty

 Squeaky door

Above all – Make sure that my onset is clean and clear. Glottal closure is important and a

strong foundation (good breath, good space, forward resonance) will provide enough for a strong

sound (trust in the work!).

SONGS:

Taking Chances

Written By: Kara DioGuardi/David A. Stewart

Analysis: I am asking a boy I have strong feelings for to take a chance with me. It doesn’t matter

the circumstances or what might be standing in our way, it’s about the love between us and

trusting that fate knows what’s right.

Breathe

Written by: Lin Manuel Miranda

From the Musical: In the Heights

Analysis: I am coming home for the first time and preparing for the moment I will go up to my

parents and tell them I’ve dropped out of school. It is hard because I remember all the good times

I’ve had home and how much everyone looks up to me and counts on me to succeed.

Cancion

Written by: Manuel De Falla

From: Siete Canciones Populares Espanoles

Translation:
Because your eyes are traitors
I will hide from them
You don't know how painful
it is to look at them.
"Mother, I feel worthless,
Mother."
They say they don't love me
and yet once
they did love me
"Love has been lost
in the air
Mother, all is lost
It is lost,
Mother."
McCrimmon 3

Analysis: I am trying to look away because the boy that I love’s eyes that once loved me now

hold nothing and it hurts.

Love, Don’t Turn Away

Written by: Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones

From the Musical: 110 in the Shade

Analysis: I am trying to convince myself and the idea of love that I could maybe have to not turn

away from this amazing opportunity.

Almost Real

Written by: Jason Robert Brown

From the Musical: Bridges of Madison County

Analysis: I am explaining my history and why I am stuck with a man I don’t love and why I feel

like a shell of woman.
