FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS | Disney Christmas Advert 2020

YouTube Channel: Disney UK

The Disney Christmas Advert 2020 entitled "From Our Family To Yours" used a variety of codes that
emphasized the all-over content and message of the video. First are the technical codes that include the
camerawork, like the basic camera shots and camera angles. Then there is the use of audio and
background music in editing. And last is the lighting, like how well-illuminated the scenes are. Next are
the symbolic codes that may involve the objects used in the scenes in the video. And after that is the
setting where the events happened, then for the last one is acting.

First for the technical codes are the camera shots and angles that the producers used in the
advertisement. For example, a scene in the first couple of seconds of the video uses a close-up shot to
indicate the 'pagmamano' Filipino gesture, a sign of respect to the elderly. There are also some medium
shots involved that display the character and the background. Some basic camera shots are applied too,
like the wide shot, two shot, and over-the-shoulder shot. A few angles are also presented, like the high
angle and low angle. Next, the editing also engages with the use of background music. The song applied
to the advert enhances its dramatic vibes, and it also heightens its sentimental concept. Afterward, the
lighting is dim or semi-lit making it more heartfelt. The audience who relate to the video will somehow
feel nostalgic because of the ambiance it radiates.

For the symbolic codes, the usage of traditional Filipino culture is remarkable, especially the "parol,"
"simbang gabi," and "pagmamamo." Following that, they indicated the setting too. The foremost setting
that the video took place was clearly around the Philippines, and the second set was in a foreign country
which is possibly in the United Kingdom, due to what the title of the advertisement implies. Lastly, the
advert used 3D animation without any spoken languages. There are only sounds to make it more realistic,
but other than that, there was only silence between the characters. However, even without the spoken
dialogues, the viewers can automatically understand the video's message.

Furthermore, the genre of this ad, according to my observation, is drama. It tackles the emotion of the
characters inside the video that will move the feelings of the audience. The plot of the advert is about a
grandmother with her granddaughter in a foreign country, carrying their old family traditions on
Christmas. The short advertisement brought so many heartwarming scenes that made me decide that the
genre is drama. The powerful love for the family is what intensifies it. The video also represented
emotional scenes that will fill the viewers' hearts with nostalgic feelings of celebrating Christmas with
their family and loved ones.

On the other hand, Disney's Christmas advertisement for the year 2020 was less viral, because first,
the holiday traditions are mostly relatable only to Filipinos. The common practices in Filipino provinces
during the Christmas season made it harder for other foreign viewers to relate and understand the
meaning or message of the video. Also, our traditions were not exclusively popular among other countries
that watch Disney works, so the number of views for this advertisement is lesser. Many Filipinos watched
that, but it was not enough to make it viral. Moreover, the other reason is the latest generations are not
interested in these types of presentations. They will most likely spend their time watching genres like
comedy, romance, action, or horror. The present generation is one of the main reasons for anything going
viral. But if there is something they cannot entirely relate to, like this advertisement, it won't be that
popular as the views depend on them. And for this advertisement, I had seen commenter, and they are
frequently those who only experienced celebrating Christmas the traditional but enjoyable way.
