Idea 1: Music video for Wish You Were Here

The video I want to create is for Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were here. The video will follow a
narrative. The music video follows a guy older than 40. His partner has died and the video
follows his memories of them together when they were younger. Two younger actors will play
the parts of the man and his partner at a younger age.The video will also show him looking at
pictures and playing the song Wish You Were Here on guitar, he will be playing it to his partner
when they are young. Another music video that has a narrative is Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs.
My video will be aimed towards older generations as the main story revolves around an older
guy. Another reason the music video is aimed at older generations is, they are more likely to
have had people close to them pass away so therefore they would relate to the video more than
someone who has never experienced it. My video is going to be aimed at A and B and socio-
economic groups. This is due to the music type the video is for and also the age demographic
the video is targetting. The video won’t be targeting the socio-economic groups of C1, C2, D or
E because they are likely to be younger than the other socio-economic groups -with the
exception of pensioners in group E- and therefore the video won’t be relatable for them due to
the main characters age difference. The age group it will be targeting is 35-55 and over 55’s.
Socio-economic groups A and B are being targeted because they have an older average age
and also these groups are more likely to enjoy songs that are longer, than a normal pop song,
with more complexity in the composition. Within psychographics my advert will target thinkers,
believers, achievers, strivers and makers as these psychographic groups put a lot of importance
in family therefore the video will appeal to them more as the video covers the issue of losing a
friend or family member.
In order to create this video I will need one actor of an older age and two actors that are
younger. I will also need a guitar for props and will need to use many different locations to show
all the places the couple went together. I will need a camera and tripod for equipment. I will not
need a microphone as the video will be backed by Wish You Were Here so there is no need to
record any audio such as speaking or foley sound.

Idea 2: Music video for Song 2

The music video is for Blur’s Song 2. This video will follow a narrative but will also include a
performance aspect so therefore it is a hybrid music video. Another video that is a similar
product to what I want to produce is the Shamen’s Ebeneezer Goode. The video will follow the
story of an office worker who is bored of his normal life and job so take to drugs and drink to
entertain himself. In the verses whilst there is no distortion he will be attending his work and it
will seem boring however when the distortion is added then he will go out, party hard and have
fun. I will use a lot of effects and lighting to make this section look to the viewer as if they are on
drugs themselves. The video is an analogy to self destructive tendencies. Everytime the
character takes drugs and drinks a lot a white masked character progressively gets closer to the
character throughout the video. The white masked character eventually kills the main character
and then takes off his mask revealing himself to be the main character. This is supposed to
symbolise that the main character ended up killing himself with the drink and drugs.
This video is targeted to a younger demographic because of the themes covered within it.
Drinks, drugs and partying appeal more to younger generations rather than older ones however
people in their early teens will not be targeted to the video either as they will not have as much
interest in going out and partying like slightly older groups. The group it will be targeting is 15-24
year olds. The socio-economic groups the video is targeting are certain groups in E -such as
student, D and C1. It will appeal to these groups as the video does not include many
sophisticated actions so wouldn’t appeal to B and A. Also most of B and A will be out of the
target age demographic for the video so probably would not enjoy it. As C2 are skilled manual
workers mostly the age is higher than the target demographic. Group C1 will be comprised of
younger people as they are white collar so have probably not been in their jobs long enough to
progress to higher levels so will appeal to group C1. Another reason the video will be appealing
towards C1 is that most white collar staff work in an office so therefore they can relate to a
boring 9 to 5 monotonous day job and going out at night to escape it and have fun. Groups D
and some groups from E will be targeted by this as they would be entertained by all the partying
the main character is doing and group D might also feel their job is boring and feel the only way
to escape the boring is to go out and party hard. Psychographic groups that are targeted by the
video are experiencers. As makers enjoy things that are familiar the video wouldn’t appeal to
them as they wouldn’t understand how the main character feels about the monotony in his life.
Achievers and strivers feel satisfaction for their jobs and so therefore this video would not
appeal to them. Experiencers are the youngest segment, have a lot of energy and enjoy
socialising so therefore they are a group that are likely to go out partying and therefore be
targeted by the video.
To complete this video I will need need a lot of lighting and coloured gels to go over the lights
and a GoPro so I can film perspective shots. I will need several props such as props that
imitates drugs like cocaine, equipment for the band -guitars, a fuzz pedal- and a fake gun. For
the video I will need one main character and also several extras so that they can pretend to be
having a party which the main character is attending.

Idea 3: Documentary on the local band ‘Mint’

The video would be a documentary featuring concert footage of the band Mint and interviews
with them. Questions the band would be asked would include how the band formed, when the
band started, how it feels to tour, their view of their infamously deprived town of Grimsby and
what’s next for the band. The concert footage would show audience members enjoying the
concert and the members of the band playing their instruments.
An example of an interview in this similar style is the I Think I Like It with the band Slaves. An
example of a documentary similar to what I want to produce is The Hot 8 Brass Band 20 Years
In The Making documentary.
The audience for this documentary will be the age demographic of 15-24. This is because the
genre of music they make is indie rock which is mostly listened to by younger generations that
have developed their own sense of music. This means the documentary won’t be aimed at
under 15’s as most people at that age follow the musical style of what is in the charts or their
parents choice in music. The interview will have a focus on where Mint is from as Grimsby is
very negatively covered in the media such as shows like Skint that filmed a series there.
Therefore the geo-demographic target audiences are from Grimsby and the surrounding areas.
The video will be aimed at the socio-economic groups of E, D, C2 and C1. This is because it
targets the majority of the people who live in Grimsby. This is because most of the population in
Grimsby works in the lower groups of the socio-economic group. The primary psychographic
this video will target is experiencers. This is because they are the youngest segment so are
therefore more likely to like the music the band plays and they spend the most money on music
so will be most interested in watching a music documentary.
In order to develop the work I will need to arrange a meet with the band and also purchase a
ticket to a concert. I will need a camera, tripod and portable audio recorder for equipment. I will
not need any props or actors for the project.
