POST ACTIVITY: COMPLEXOMETRIC TITRATION

Name: Martina Chantal B. Laxamana Year and Sec: BSMT-2C

Part I. Select your answer from the words in the parenthesis to make the statement true.

High 1. A stable complex has (high, low) formation constant.

Two 2. EDTA has (two, four, six) amino groups.

Weak 3 EDTA is considered as a (weak, strong) acid.

Tetra- 4. EDTA is classified as (mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-) protic acid.

Cation 5. Complexometric titration commonly determines the amount (anions, cations) in solution.

Multidentate 6. In choosing a complexometric titrant, (unidentate, multidentate) is preferred because

they give sharper endpoint.

Masking 7. It refers to addition of auxillary ligand that potentially forms highly stable complexes with
the potential interferring cation. (masking, precipitation, demasking )

Part II. Multiple Choice. Choose the letter of the BEST answer.

C 1. Classify the ligand with the structure at the right.

A] unidentate C] bidentate
B] tridentate D] tetradentate
B 2. Ammonia is a chelating agent?
A] True B] False
A 3. Ammonia is a ligand?
A] True B] False
A 4. The following are ligands EXCEPT:
A] hydronium ion B] halide C] glycine D] ammonia
C 5. Macrocycles commonly include the atoms of the elements below EXCEPT:
A] nitrogen B] oxygen C] fluorine D] sulfur
C 6. In the picture below, what is the coordination number of cobalt ion?
A] two
B] four
C] six
D] eight

C 7. The following metal ions form a 1:1 complex with EDTA EXCEPT:
A] Ba2+ B] Mg2+ C] Fe3+ D] Na+
For numbers 8-10, identify the type of titration being described.

A] direct titration B] back titration C] displacement titration

B 8] An excess of EDTA is added to the metal ion solution, and the excess EDTA is titrated with a
known concentration of a second metal ion.

C 9] Here the analyte is treated with an excess of a second metal bound to EDTA. The analyte ion
removes the second metal from the EDTA complex, and then the second metal is titrated with EDTA

A 10] In this type of EDTA titration, you simply add an indicator to a solution of the metal ion and
titrate with EDTA

Part III. Watch the you tube videos below, then answer the following questions.

Titration with EDTA

1. What primary standard was used in the experiment?

- 0.25g dried Calcium carbonate

2. Why do you need to HCl solution?

- It is needed to dissolve the Calcium carbonate properly.

3. What is the purpose of standardization of EDTA?

- To determine the actual concentration of EDTA used because EDTA is a secondary standard
and quickly degrades if exposed to light. Also, to know the measurement of metal ion present
and the molar equivalence of the solution.

4. What is the purpose of adding ammonia or NH3-NH4Cl buffer into the solution prior to titration
with EDTA?
- To maintain the pH of the solution which is 10 and adjust it to ensure that complete reaction
will be attained.

5. What is the name of the indicator used?

-Eriochrome Black T is the indicator used in the experiment.

6. What is the color change displayed by the indicator?

- It changes from red to blue in a purpose of excess EDTA.
