32. Amine are organic compounds in which one or more of hydrogen atoms of ammonia have been
replaced by an alkyl group are among the most abundant compounds in the biological world. We
begin to appreciate their biological importance as we explore the structure and properties of amino
acids and proteins. Amines can be classified as primary, secondary or tertiary depending on whether
one, two or three hydrogen atoms have been replaced by an alkyl group. Amines react as bases and
as nucleophiles. Primary aryl amines react with nitrous acid to form stable arenediazonium salts
which are useful to synthesize a wide variety of substituted benzene derivatives. Amines can be
distinguished using Hinsberg’s reagent.
