Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city?
In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the
historic feeling of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other
reasons – for example, economic reasons – why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that the
historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then
if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are
many examples in my own home of Tours where radical modern designs have been placed very
succesfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate
its surroundings too much, it often enhances the attractiveness of the area.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users and viewers of the buildings, I believe
that it is the duty of the arhitect and planner to move things forward. If we constantly reproduced what
was there before, we would all still be living in caves. (Paul Dummet, John Hughes, Helen
Stephenson,National Geographic, Life Series, Cengage Learning, Hampshire, UK, 2005, p.23)
1. I usually have breakfast at seven o’clock, but my brother does not like to get up so early.
2. I’ve heard he has lost his job; I wonder how he will be able to support such a large family.
3. When you grow up, you will understand the meaning of his words.
4. What’s that you are eating? Hasn’t the doctor told you to go on a diet?
5. You are being so obnoxious today; unless you try at least to keep up the appearances, everyone will
start to comment.
Dileme morale

Moral Dilemmas
A doctor has a duty to cure his patients. But a patient asks him not to apply his treatment (for
religious reasons), which can be fatal. If the physician respects the duty for which he swore (not to hurt
him), he must oblige the patient to have the treatment, thus breaking the rule of informed consent based
on which the patient decides autonomously, ultimately, about their own body. If he respects this rule, he
breaks his duty to do good. How should he act in order to behave morally? We will have to find criteria
for debt hierarchy. But in the dilemmas in which both solutions end in death, it is hard to believe in
hierarchy, for it would morally justify murder in certain circumstances. Are there morally justified
killings? Meeting which criterion? Age? Sex or race? Political affiliation? A court sentence?
