Your ATP Maintenance Library

Your ATP Maintenance Library is encoded in a special arrangement that allows you to view
aviation maintenance documents on your computer screen exactly as they were published on
paper. However, this product surpasses paper in terms of efficiency and quality because of the
following:

• The interface in this product includes features that allow you to navigate and search through
maintenance manuals quickly and efficiently.
• ATP Maintenance Libraries allow you to enhance the view of the maintenance information
you need by providing the ability to magnify graphics and text to better suit your needs.
• Advanced Printing options allow you to print specific pages and page ranges.
• Your ATP Maintenance Library is easy to store and update.

Installing Your ATP Maintenance Library


In order to use your ATP Maintenance Library

1. Insert the disc into your CD-ROM drive.


2. On the “Start” Menu, select “Run.”
3. Enter D:\setup.exe (where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) and click OK.
4. Follow the on-screen prompts.
5. A window named “ATP Navigator” will pop up on your computer screen. Click on the file
“ATP Tech Pubs.” You can now begin using the product.

An “ATP Tech Pubs” icon will appear on your desktop. This icon will be linked to the CD-ROM
drive from which you installed the library. Every time you use your library, make sure that you
insert the CD-ROM into the drive in which you installed it. When you double-click on this icon, the
index page of the inserted CD-ROM opens. You can now begin using the product by clicking on
the section you wish to view first.

If you have multiple ATP CDs and you are using a local CD-ROM drive, you only need to run the
setup once. The “ATP Tech Pubs” icon will run all Maintenance CDs inserted into the same CD
drive.

You can always return to the index page by clicking on the “Home” link that will appear on the
Navigational Structures pane (see Figure 3).

Tips for Installing the ATP Maintenance Library on a Network


To avoid confusion between CD libraries, it may be helpful to implement the following procedures
when installing your ATP Maintenance Libraries on a Network:

• Create a single folder on the Network for ATP Maintenance Libraries.


• Create shortcuts within this folder that are linked to the appropriate CD-ROMs.
• Identify each CD by naming icons according to CD content, including model line, book
content, and CD volume number.
• Create a shortcut to this ATP Maintenance Library folder at each client PC.

Clicking Tools, the Work Area and Navigational Structures
Unlike other applications, PDF documents use adaptations of a hand tool as well as an arrow to
click on tools. The hand tool adjusts automatically to carry out functions depending on which tools
you utilize.

The Acrobat “work area” is a term used to describe the window you will use to view and navigate
through PDF documents. To make the work area easier to navigate, you may want to customize
the search button to make searching through documents easier later on. To do this, find the
button and click on the triangle to the right of the icon. Select the “Expand This Button.” All of the
tools related to the search tool now appear on the toolbar. You can reverse this process by
clicking again on the triangle next to the right of the tools.

Your work area should now look like the diagram below. There are several features on this page
that make navigation through the PDF document simpler. It is important to know what these
functions do and how to identify them.

A. The Menu Bar is the Total of all the toolbars.

B. The File Toolbar contains buttons that allow you to Open, Save, and Print Documents.

At times, there will be tools that you will want to use that are hidden, or you may want to hide or
move tools, toolbars, or menus all together in order to customize the view of the document to suit
your needs and preferences.
Showing or Hiding the Menu Bar
To hide the menu bar, choose Window > Hide Menu Bar. To view again, press F9.

Showing or Hiding Toolbars


To show or hide a toolbar, choose Window > Toolbars and locate the name of the toolbar that
you wish to show or hide. A checkmark appears next to a toolbar name if it is currently visible.

Separating Toolbars
Drag the toolbar by the separator bar between two groups of icons, and the toolbar will split into
two. Drag the toolbar back to its original location to reattach it.

To select a tool in a toolbar, do one of the following:


To select a visible tool, click on the tool.

To make a hidden tool visible, click on the triangle next to a related tool until the additional tools
appear, and then select the desired tool.

To place hidden tools in the toolbar alongside the visible tools, hold down the mouse button or the
triangle next to it until the additional tools appear, and select the “Expand This Button.” All of the
tools related to the original visible tool now appear on the toolbar. You can reverse this process
by clicking again on the triangle next to the right of the tools.
Navigational Structures
Your ATP Maintenance Library features two “Navigational Structures” designed to help you
quickly navigate through your maintenance documents. These structures each have their own
palettes or “tabs” located on the left side of the Work Area. Click on either tab to display the
palette corresponding to the navigational structure you want to employ.

Bookmarks serve as a table of contents. The Bookmark palette is selected by default when you
open your ATP Maintenance Library. Double clicking on a Bookmark will expand the Bookmark to
display the subtopics within a particular section. You can use Bookmarks to jump to a particular
topic or sub-topic by clicking on them.

Thumbnails are “miniature previews” of document pages. You can use Thumbnails to jump to
another page or to display another part of a current page. To jump to another page, simply click
on the Thumbnail corresponding to that page. To display another part of a current page, position
the pointer over the edge of the Thumbnail box until it changes into the hand tool. Then drag the
box to move the view area.
Basic Functions:
Opening, Printing, Searching, and Copying

Now that you are familiar with the navigation and viewing features of the work area, you may
want to perform other functions. You can print sections or whole documents, search through
documents using keywords, move specific sections of documents into other software programs.
This section will explain how to perform these functions.

Opening a Document
To open the collection of manuals on the CD simply double click the ATP Tech Pubs icon on your
desktop. With the index page open, click on a specific book in your ATP Maintenance library to
open it.

Printing
You can print whole documents, specific pages, or specific sections within pages. To do so,
simply go to the “File” Menu and click on the “Print” option, as illustrated below, or click on the
button.

The “Print” Dialog box will pop up on the screen:

In the print dialog box, you can customize the print job to best suit your needs. For example, you
can print a specific page range by entering the range in the “Pages From __ to __” boxes. You
can also limit the print job to only the current page (the page currently displayed on the screen) or
you can print all of the pages in the document. The program also allows an option in which you
can shrink or expand pages to the size of the paper specified in the printer properties.
Searching
Using the Search Function:

Your ATP Maintenance Library enables you to search for keywords throughout the entire CD. To
do so, click on the “Search” icon . The search dialog box will pop up:

You can now perform text-based searches by typing text within the search box. For example, you
may type “tires” in the search box to find all of the documents in the library related to tires:

The search engine will retrieve your results within the “Search Results” box. To view the result,
double-click on the search result itself, or click on the “View” Button.

Once you obtain your search results, you can return to these results by choosing the “Search
Results” option on the “Search” menu. In addition, you can bring this option onto the toolbar by
choosing “Expand this Button” at the bottom of the “Search” menu (see above).

Using the Find Function


You can use the Find function to find the occurrence of words within the open publication. To do
so, click on the icon. The “Find” Dialog Box will pop up on the screen.

Type in the word you want to find within the document. The check boxes below the “Find What”
form offer several options. “Match Whole Words Only” will retrieve only the exact word, rather
than fragments or derivatives of the word. “Match Case” means that the program will retrieve the
word exactly as it is typed, i.e. if you type your query in lower case letters only, only that word in
lower case will be shown in your results. “Find Backwards” means that the program will retrieve
results from the point you begin the search in the document to the beginning of the document, as
opposed from that point in the document forward. “Ignore Asian Character Width” can be ignored,
as this product does not contain Asian characters.

After you have decided which options to choose, click on “Find.” The program will find the word in
the text and highlight it. You can continue to find occurrences of the same word throughout the
document by clicking on “Find Again.”

Note: The Search and Find functions will only perform searches of the CD-ROM currently
in your CD-ROM drive or the specific CD you have chosen from a network. You must insert
or select subsequent CD-ROMs in order to retrieve search results from publications on
separate CDs.

Note: Keep in mind that you are searching an image file when you search this product. The
product uses an automated character recognition process to match your search requests
to the page images. Image quality, background and other factors will have an effect on the
efficacy of search results. Please use care in selecting your search terms and in
interacting with the system to maximize the efficacy of your search results.

Copying and Exporting Text and Graphics into Other


Applications
You can copy small amounts of text and graphics from your ATP Maintenance Library into other
applications, such as Microsoft Word. To do so, click on the text select tool .

To select a single line of text, select the first letter of the sentence or phrase and drag to the last
letter.

To select multiple columns of horizontal text, hold down “Ctrl” on your keyboard as you drag
across the width of the document. To select multiple columns of vertical text, hold down Ctrl + Alt
and drag down the length of the document. To select all of the text on a page, choose “Select All”
from the “Edit” menu.

Choose Edit > Copy to copy the selected text onto the Clipboard. Open up the application in
which you would like to place the text and choose Edit > Paste.

To copy graphics into other applications, use the Graphics select tool . The graphics select
tool works much like the text tool in that you click and drag the tool around the image you wish to
copy. Choose Edit > Copy to copy the selected graphic onto the Clipboard. Open up the
application in which you would like to place the graphic and choose Edit > Paste.
