Making Good Argument

In academic writing presenting argument plays significant role in making audience

convinced about the proposition that the writer has been making. For the same, the

idea that academic writing is not just compiling ideas but is a process of developing
the salutation of the problem that the writer and the readers care about. In a nutshell to
present a good argument a writer needs to consider five elements which are claim,
reason, evidence, acknowledgement and warrant.
As argument is the base through which the writer convinces his/her audience that the
proposition that he has been making is reasonable but there are certain norms that a
writer has to follow while making an argument. The first thing that he has to consider
claim and it means the point that the writer want make your audient. It can be done by
providing reasons. Here reason means why the writer is presenting a particular idea in
general. Moreover, the writer has to present the evidence and based on the evidence,
the audience can be convinced. Consequently the writer presents acknowledgement
and response which will be followed by warrant. Warrant, in this context, means the
writer explains his/her reasoning so that whatever the claim s/he has made can be
made convincing to the audience.
On the other hand, the primary purpose of writing something academically is to find
the solution of the problem. Here the solution of the problem is the main claim that the
writer makes in his/her writing and it is needless to say that it can be done through
reason and evidence. Moreover, sometimes a writer may have to make complex
argument and a complex argument involves incorporation of more than one reason
and more than one evidence. If a complex argument can be made, the claim and the
assertion, the writer makes in his/her writing will be more convincing to audience in
one hand and on the other it helps the writer find the solution of the problem which is
the main claim that that the writer makes in writing.
In summary, writing is a process and some people consider it to be a product. But I am
very much fascinated by five elements of writing which are claim, reason, evidence,
acknowledgment and warrant. Till today I was involved in the act of academic writing
without knowing these basic element of writing and if I would have incorporated these
element in my academic writing careers, my writing could be very precise in one
hand and on the other it would be very convincing on the part of my audience. More
importantly I am very much indebted to the author that I have never thought about
complex argument since presenting soothing through complex argument is more
convincing as well as realistic in the sense that it is done make the claim more precise.
