Siemens in Algeria

Siemens has been active for 47 years in Algeria, where it holds leading positions
in its Industry, Energy and Healthcare Sectors, while Siemens IT Solutions and
Services operates across all three Sectors. More than 30 high-voltage
substations and a recently completed 500-MW gas turbine plant from Siemens
are ensuring the reliability of the county’s power supply. In fiscal 2009 (October
1, 2008 – September 30, 2009), sales to customers in Algeria amounted to more
than EUR 185 million. New orders totaled more than EUR 132 million. Siemens
currently has over 430 employees in Algeria.

In fiscal 2009, Siemens in Algeria scored major successes in the following

Sectors:

Industry Sector
Siemens was awarded a contract by the ETRHB HADDAD Group to provide the
downstream connection for a desalinization plant supplying the water system of
Tlemcen, one of the country’s major cities.
In December 2008, Algiers Metro operator RATP awarded Siemens Algeria, in a
consortium with Siemens Mobility France, an 8-year contract for the maintenance
of its entire automation system, control center, signaling system and low-voltage
systems. This contract was a follow-up to the order received by the consortium
led by Siemens Mobility France with France’s Vinci Construction Grand Projects
and Spain’s Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A. (CAF) for the
complete turnkey Algiers Metro system project in 2006.

Following two years of market studies and strategy implementation, the Industry
Automation and Drive Technologies Divisions are now well positioned in the
Algerian market, and Siemens is showing strong business growth after only one
year. The two Divisions are providing training for various Siemens products and
systems such as PLCs, drives, human-machine interfaces and converters. In
addition, Siemens Algeria has also established a Sitrans training center that also
handles after-sales service for the electronic devices. Engineering and
integration services are provided by the company’s network of distributors and
integrators.

Energy Sector
Sonelgaz, the state-owned power utility, awarded Siemens a contract for
supplying two air-insulated substations with 60/10-kV and 60/30-kV capacities.
Siemens also signed a power plant operation and maintenance contract with
Sonelgaz.
Siemens won a contract from Saipem, an engineering, procurement and
construction company, to deliver 3 BOG (Boil-Off Gas) compressors for a liquid
natural gas (LNG) project in the western part of the country.

Healthcare Sector
The healthcare business in Algeria is now managed by the Healthcare Sector
from its headquarters in Germany. A local partner has been engaged to provide
services and maintenance.

The history of Siemens in Algeria dates back to 1857, when Werner von Siemens
participated in the first undersea telegraphic cable installation between Europe
and Africa: the line connecting Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, with Annaba in
Algeria. Siemens established its first Representative Office in Algeria in 1962, the
year of the country’s independence, and subsequently founded a Regional
Company in 2002. This was followed by Siemens Spa, a joint stock company, in
2005, and the consolidation of the Regional Company in 2006. In 2004, Siemens
AG acquired a 51-percent stake in ESTEL Rail Automation Spa, a subsidiary of
the National Company of Railway Transportation.
Good corporate citizenship is integral to all of the company’s business activities,
and Siemens in Algeria is well known for its commitment to benefit Algeria’s
social and cultural activities. Siemens is fully dedicated to a business strategy
that generates profits while contributing to the well-being of the societies it
serves.
