Your abstract In response to the growing challenge of inequality around
the world partly attributed to irresponsible use of the
environment and its resources, the United Nations in 2015
adopted the 2030 agenda for sustainable development; a
set of seventeen (17) sustainable development goals
(SDGs); with emphasis on eradicating poverty. Achieving
these goals calls for a global partnership, involving the
public and private sectors. Noting the increase in the funds
available to institutional investors, the paper places core
emphasis on the Nigerian private sector and the activities
of oil explorers in the Niger delta region and, from doctrinal
and empirical perspectives examines the possible strategic
contributions of the institutional investors can make in
ensuring that companies involve in environmentally
sensitive activities, perform the explorative operations in
environmental friendly sustainable manner. The paper
identifies Responsible Investment, as one of the primary
instruments that can be engaged in promoting sustainable
development and bridging the inequality gap prevalent in
the country.
