a scattering of punks , plus 60 J apanese k ids - (from Japanl !l ) . It was a typical

I trY to convince myself that I dont like the TOM ROliiNOON B&ID , but they' re no t
all that bad.If they cut out sooe of the overt poli tical slogans and concentrated
on the 11Usic they would be much better for it.

The CLIQUE played a better set tonight than t ney did at the University a few weeks
ago.Apart from the small stage the Heath is an ideal place for up and coming bands.
The CLIQUE were out of place on the large,bright University stage .
Tonight the groups playing was improved,and Gordanas singing was better too;how-
ever she seemed to wam up as the set progressed , starting off r i th weak vocals and
putting more in as she went on.It was the same with her stage mannerisms ( a bit
forced we thought) - she was very static at the start, only movine around towards the
end.Her singing is still 3iouxsie influenced,but with some vari ety tonigh t , eg. - she
varied the tempo of her singing sligh tly,but not enough to keep un with the r es t of
the group) . ·
The be st songs were- ''H igh on the altar" ,"Crying sname",(not played as well as
last t i:ne) , and the encore,"The hero" .
The CLI~U~ have a lot of pro~ise and are worth ~oing to see when you next get the
THE TAR;}ETS
This is the first time I 've seen the TARG 3TS and I was qui te impressed . They are a
good,musical , rock band with some great guitar w.ork .Ho wever some ~f the ac-tual mat-
erial is lacking: they need to develop so:t~e sort of character. Thel.r songs say so~ &
thing without being too 1 street leve! ' ,as they are a fun band , who try to establl.sh
some sort of rapport with their audience.
The numbers which stood out tonight were- ''Never thougnt it would come to this",
"Teenage lament" ''Man in the !lliddle" , (whicn reminded me of ' Man in the box' by V2) ,
"Time s up" , (.!!2..! hte BUZZCOCKS song).''Hope I die before get o~..t",Ricilard liell' s -
"Blank generation" , and "Wordless and breathless", (one of tnel.r best) .
Towards the end of the set the si!lJ :?r start<!rl J u:·:-; i ; ;.; around, but there wasn t much
room on the stage. They did their eneore sitting down !
There wasnt much response to the TARG ETS, I tnink most people had come to see the
CLIQUE tonight as they started drifting away b efor e the TARGETS finished t h eir set.

The DANTS need a benevolent manager who ' s rich,who wont interfere with

All this ::~ igh t sound too much like business , but its best to know wnat you
are up against. The companies want to make money ou t of the band , they're not
going to sign anybody because they like the music ,af ter all , tneir favourite
· ph ras e is "good product" . As if we didnt h ave enough already . The finished

about the only ways that bands outside London get to be heard about .

Coventry o r not - Some,like RU3i do ,but other smaller, (but infinetly better,

350,000 of us - surely thats enough , even for someone with as bi g a bead as

40 or SOp, and you can see one of the 15 or so Co-.entry groups - maybe its 20 or
so by now.. Go to a small pub, see a good band,maybe see them afterwards, buy their
single next day for 75p - wha t more could you ask? It you don t like anythmg, then
ro out and do 1 t yourself - thata what the pistols did.
But wait- 'God saTe the Queen - instrumental Tersion'. Perhaps you'd bet ter
keep buying overpriced L.P. s anyway.

I asked them about their influen ces - Dav e ' lost h i s credibility' by saying
that his' hero ' is Mark Farner of GRAND FUNK (and he buys all tne RUSI and GRAND
••• FUNK albums.»ray reckons he is influenced by DEAF SCHOOL,and he hates borinl
heavy music . KeT said that ~1cCavery, the KlllK.S drummer was his only influence.

Coventry and play locally - they will be doing a l o a d of gigs to tie in with their
single release .
The X- C.:.RTS rehearse 5 n 1.gn ts a •.-:.H'.< , snaring tne basement of the travel agents
where Gray works with BLACK PARROT 5~IDE . They are now looking fo r a ' good nard-
working' keyboards player to augment the band , because in a full gig (which they
didnt play at the Univ e rsity) , Dave plays keyboards on a couple of numbers,and tney
want a f'ull time r eplacemen t .
By the way, Dave wants people to come u p and talk to them af ter gigs - he says they
were ignored at the University ~ •• and thats a bou t it, we 'l l r ev iew the single as
soon as ~e ge t hold of a copy . I hope its a succ e s s for them .

I don ' t really uncersiand this Group , I don ' t think that they understand themselves ,
nevertheless • I first encountered what was to be the nucleus of the
' Dinosaurs ' in 1977 , t~en masqueradine un1er the name of ' C. fi . Spotts ana His
Very Own Voice 1and ' with a bare lineup of acoustic e,uitar , lead Puitar and harp
t~ ey beran the bones of w~at •:e now know as ' panic Music ' . 'fhe:-• rehearsed .. a
cole danp eel lar deet.. t eneath 82 \-]ellington Road in the heart of :·e::-r~· 'iarr ,
~ir'" in~~A M , •.r ith an occasional seccnd r.uiiarist ' Cowpat ' and ir. the space of a
week had writ Len we 11 over twenty songs . Unfortunately , then as now , the.v were
not r roficient MUsicians ; which, rer.e~ber , prior to this new a.~ was a cardinal
~in . Amonf"St the songs they played me •:ere ' The Snare ' , ' Problems with the Puss ' ,
1 Rolli':1C' River Blues ', ana earlier versions of 'fi1 5. 94 Blues' and ' l·zy Strange
? xperience (in Your Roof) '. ~~ey were hardly toeether , yet they did pe rform
just once , emergin( to play one cig at the ' Crown and Cushion ', Birminghaw, i n
f.a~' of that year . It was a disaster and off the sta -e they bounded after :~us t
one number their musical aspiratio:~s , public at least , seemingly gone . They
r~ tlrrned to the ir re~pective studies of arc~itecture and electronics and continued
t o live in that house .
That ice ace was until Januar:-· of this year, when I encountered two of them once
more . They were now five and were prone to borrow others when the mood took the~ .
They now had scattered amonrst their ranks some 100 songs - but not all of them
knew how to play them! Still the advent of punk had wiped the musical boards
clean, or so the me1ia told us , and strangely the ' Dinosaurs ' with little
r elevance to anything in 1977 , seemed now not so decadent . Sadly , the opportunity
to oee t her. in this city at least just didn ' t exist . How one gets the confidence
to go onto the alien gig circuit of London havinc. not been weened on a more
hospitaole home circuit is beyond me . So I saw them in a front living room , i n
their house , Coventry , which is probably the main stare for any of the many groups
now rearing t hc-msel ves in Coven ~ry . A rare chance , however, to see them did come
in !·;arc~ of t ris year at the \olarwic.< Uni versit:: Rock Contest. Without either bass-
ist or drummer , their short set lacked both beat and t imin.r· , and a gain they weren ' t
very good , but they seemed happy enourh , dressed in their bandages , leathers and
multi- coloured pyjamas .

written about a mad professor- type who rides a bike around the streets of Coventry.
Running and riding away in fact seem to be a reoccuring theme in many of their
lyrics . I ' ll leave them to leave you with words from their title song ; ' We ' re the
