Ethics & The Law

A behavior may be legal but unethical :

Example of legal but unethical: if a manager always gives benefits such as cash
bonuses, promotions, higher salary, etc to male employees instead of female
emloyees, even though those female employees have the same level of
qualifications and skills as those male employees, than that manager is gender
biased and make all his decisions while favouring males over females. Now, this
method of giving promotions or other benefits; its not right, but its also not illegal.
So what this manager is doing is not ethical, but it is legal.

A behavior may be illegal but ethical:

A law firm has an employee who is an excellent lawyer and who has been working
for the firm for a long period of time, now recently the company director found out
that this employees has a fake licence to practise law. Now the director decides to
not report the employee to the authorities simply because the ditector knows that
the employees has been practicing law really well and will continue to do so in the
future. Because in terms of the job the employee is a really good lawyer
eventhough he does not have a real license. So this act of the dircetor can be
considered as illegal but ethical.

A behavior may be both legal and ethical:

Injuries are common in factories. Therefore, companies that pay all the medical
fees for employees who get injured (while working in the factories) as well as give
those employees few months leave for recovery are acting within the legal and
ethical boundaries as employers.
So this act of companies towards its employees is ethical and legal.
A behavior may be both illegal and unethical :
Suppose, Due to Corona Virus, The government has locked down all garments and
factories. But In this case ,If the garment's authority forces the employees to work
then this action would be illegal and unethical.
