1) What is Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)?
• Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to
more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a new strain that has not been
previously identified in humans.
2) How are they transmitted?
• They are transmitted between animals and humans.
• From human to human Mode of transmission is unclear but available evidence points to human-to-
human transmission occurring between close contacts through respiratory route.
• Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.
3) What are common symptoms of infection?
• Respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.
• In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney
failure and maybe death.
4) How can I protect myself from coronavirus?
• Regular hand washing with soap
• Sanitize hands with alcohol-based hand rub
• Covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing by elbow
• Thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.
• Avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and
sneezing.
• Wear Mask if you have respiratory symptoms such as cough or runny nose.
5) What to do when I am in china?
• Do not visit wet markets or farms.
• Avoid any activity involving groups of people.
• Keep some distance from people who are obviously sick.
• Maintain good personal hygiene.
• Carry hand sanitiser for use when soap and water are not readily available.
• Wear Mask if in crowded places and if you have respiratory symptoms such as cough or runny nose
• Seek medical attention if you develop symptoms.
6) Is there a treatment?
• There is no specific treatment, but symptoms can be treated.
7) Is there any trade or travel restrictions?
• As of now, WHO does not recommend any restriction of travel or trade.
