SETUP PROCEDURE: how to force the Explorer into software upload

mode.

Switch the terminal off (remove batt and install it again), press the C key and keep it
pressed while switching ON the terminal.
Release the C bottom after 5 sec.
This shall bring the terminal into "software upload mode"
Connect the terminal to a pc via USB. (If not installed: See below)
Start the Hyper Terminal program.
When C C C C appears, start transferring the downloaded software.
If the CCCCCCC do not appear, ship the terminal to repair!

The procedure is based on Windows XP running in windows ‘Classic Start menu’

Upgrade Applications Code

1. Download the latest Explorer 500 software from the T&T Extranet. Store it in a local
folder, and unzip it. The software file has the extension .dl
2. Write in HyperTerminal ‘ATE1’ in order to enable echo (allowing to see what is written
in terminal mode)
3. Write in HyperTerminal ‘at+thrane’
• Username = admin
• Password = 1234
• Now in debug shell type: ‘at-usb0:/$’

4. Write in HyperTerminal in the debug shell prompt ‘download 30’

You have now started the ‘EXPLORER 500’ for downloading the new Applications
code within a period of 30 seconds.

Important: From the time of entering the command ‘download 30’ - Section 4 and 5
below needs to be performed within the specified time; in this case 30 seconds.

If you get an error message ‘Cxmodem error’ from the debug shell just repeat the
download again starting from the step above but this time with a higher delay value.

5. In the HyperTerminal menu

• Select ‘Transfer->Send File…’

6. Select in the new window ’Send File’

• Select ‘Browse..’
• Open the downloaded file
• Select ‘Protocol: 1K Xmodem’
• Select ‘Send’
 • Now the new Applications code is downloaded with the xmodem 1-k protocol from
HyperTerminal.
• The terminal will reboot. DO NOT SWITCH OF THE TERMINAL. The Terminal
must be allowed to reboot.

7. In the HyperTerminal menu

• Select ‘Call->Disconnect’

Install the USB driver

Please be aware that you might have to run the procedure below more than once because

the EXPLORER 500 offers you two com ports. They will be installed on your PC running
the Wizard three times.
Download the T&T USB drivers from the T&T Extranet. Store it in a local folder and unzip it.

Important!!
o The installation procedure is based on a pc running Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 2.
o Make sure that the windows driver usbser.sys is located in the
C:\windows\system32\drivers folder. If not, locate the usbser.sys driver on the
hard drive, and copy it to the C:\windows\system32\drivers folder.
o If the usbser.sys driver is not located in the C:\windows\system32\drivers the
installation will fail. “not able to install modem”

How to locate the usbser.sys driver, running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2?
o The usbser.sys driver is to be found in the directory C:\WINDOWS\Driver
Cache\i386\
o Search on the filename usbser.sys and then copy it to following destination:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\
o Sometimes Windows can not find it with the search function because it is inside a
CAB file. In that case you need to open the CAB file: C:\WINDOWS\Driver
Cache\i386\Driver.CAB and extract the file usbser.sys manually and copy it to
following destination: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\

Reboot of the terminal:

8. When / if asked ‘Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?’
• Select ‘No, not this time’
• Select ‘Next’

9. When asked ‘What do you want the wizard to do?’

• Select ‘Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
• Select ‘Next’

10. When asked ‘Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install’
• Select ‘Next’

11. In the new window ‘Install From Disk’

• Select ‘Browse…’
• Open the local folder
• Select ‘OK’
• Select ‘Next’

12. In the new window ‘Hardware Installation’

• Select ‘Continue Anyway’, if the dialogue shows

13. When told ‘Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard’

• Select ‘Finish’

Note: The Wizard will run up to three times!! - Installing two modems and one Multi-
port serial adapter.

14. Start Control panel – ‘Phone an Modem Options’

15. Select ‘Modems’ and note the COM port assigned to ‘Thrane & Thrane EXPLORER port

16. In the HyperTerminal menu
• Select ‘File->Properties’
• Select in ‘Connect using’ the new COM port which appeared in your COM port list
of ‘Phone and Modem Options’ above.

Do not select ‘Thrane & Thrane EXPLORER port x’, you have to select a ‘COM’
port.

The number on the com port you have to select may have changed after the
installation of the new USB driver

17. Test that you have selected the right COM port.
• Write in HyperTerminal the AT command ‘ATI’.
• respond from the AT shell ‘Thrane & Thrane’
