INTERNSHIP PLAN
Goal – Evaluate the effectiveness of our Tier II Reading Intervention program, Newsela,
as it relates to the following school-wide goal: 48% of all students will demonstrate
proficiency in all strands in reading by 6/14/19 as measured by the spring state
assessment.
Activity – Regularly observe all Tier II Intervention classes, looking primarily at the
level of student engagement and bell-to-bell instruction.
Activity – Analyze the reading data of all students that are placed into Tier II Reading
classes to ensure adequate growth. Compare our school reading data for each student in
Tier II Reading courses to that of state assessment data.
Timeline – Throughout the 2018-2019 school year and through Fall 2019 when M-Step
scores are released.
Support Needed – Next fall, I will need to have access to all 2019 M-Step scores. I will
need time to observe my Tier II Reading classes. I will also need to become more
familiar with Newsela, along with other potential options for Tier II Reading Intervention
programs.
Goal – Evaluate the effectiveness of our current READ 180 and/or Corrective Reading
program(s) as it relates to the following school-wide goal: 48% of all students will
demonstrate proficiency in all strands in reading by 6/14/19 as measured by the spring
state assessment.
Activity – Explore options for the purchase of new curricular materials for READ180,
based on the analysis of student progress within the program.
Activity – Seek out appropriate training for READ180 and enable intervention team
members to attend training on the program.
Support Needed – I will need funding to attend READ180 training for myself and my
staff members. I would like to get a go-ahead to price out updated READ180 materials.
I will also need access to all reading testing data throughout the year.
Michigan Standard III: Management of Organization, Operation, & Resources
Goal – Assist in the hiring of quality intervention aide(s) and possibly the hiring of
additional intervention teacher(s) based on the number of students that place into
Academic Intervention classes and on the funding received from the 31A Fund.
Activity – Actively recruit quality intervention staff members and/or review the
resumes of all applicants and connect with these individuals in the search for the most
qualified applicant(s).
Activity – Work to gain a better understanding of 31A Funding in order to optimize our
resources within our department.
Support Needed – I need to meet with my administrator and the central office clerk to
gain a better understanding of 31A. I also need to gain access to any applicants that
have applied to the open positions within my department.
Goal – Educate students and families about the academic intervention process, as a
whole. This includes: how students qualify for this program, the effects of the program
on overall student achievement, and the process by which students transition out of the
program.
Activity – Create and present a detailed explanation about the process for Meet the
Teacher Night.
Activity – Educate all incoming parents and students about our academic intervention
program at RMS during orientation. This may help mitigate initial resistance to our
classes at the beginning of the school year.
Support Needed – Time built into Meet the Teacher Night and 7th Grade Orientation
Night to present; Access to Academic Intervention data and time to analyze that data.
Michigan Standard V: Ethics, Integrity, Fairness, & Practice
Goal – To become fluent with the use of Restorative Practices with regards to handling
conflicts that arise amongst students and/or staff.
Goal – To assist in initiating intensive Language Acquisition classes designed for English
Language Learners.
Activity – Assist in selecting and scheduling ELL students for our newly established
Language Acquisition classes.
Activity – Analyze and monitor assessment data to ensure adequate progress is being
made and adjust the curriculum accordingly.
Support Needed – Training in best strategies for ELL students; Access to ELL Testing
data
Michigan Standard VII: Substantial & Sustained Educational Leadership Internship
Experience
Activity – Work with my mentors to apply skills learned throughout the program to daily
administrative tasks.
