    The early history of Kuwait began in the early 18th century when families from the Anizah tribe migrated to the area and established settlements. In 1756, the settlers appointed a sheikh from the Al Sabah family to rule over the autonomous sheikhdom of Kuwait. Towards the late 19th century, the ruler Abdullah II began moving Kuwait closer to the Ottoman Empire for protection, but Kuwait was never placed under Ottoman rule. His successor Mubarak the Great reversed this trend and cultivated a close relationship with Britain instead, resulting in a 1899 treaty that granted Britain control over Kuwait's foreign affairs and making Kuwait a British protectorate after World War I.
