John Koenig Thoughts - Space: 1999

KOENIG:
"A giant leap for mankind. It's beginning to look like a stumble in the dark."
- Breakaway

HELENA:
"John. I'm sorry."
KOENIG:
"You were right. Totally right. If you'd done anything else I'd want to know why."
HELENA:
"But-"
KOENIG:
"But nothing. Helena. If you went out to that spaceship and came back with a crazy
story like I did, I'd be a fool not to lock you up. How could anyone possibly know
that a planet on a collision course would not collide ... but simply touch."
- Collision Course

KOENIG:
"Is it death that gives a meaning to life, in the end?"
TANNER (VO):
"If there is an end?"
- Death's Other Dominion

HAINES:
"Why, Commander? Why?"
KOENIG:
"Good question."
HAINES:
"You work with a man. You think you know him. You come to respect him. And
suddenly..you don't know him at all."
KOENIG:
"Only his name was changed. The man..the man was the same. Look, Haines. His
sacrifice gave us a future. His knowledge ... hope. Now someone has to carry on his
work. If you respected the man, don't let that sacrifice be wasted."
- Voyager's Return

KOENIG:
"Victor. We're gonna be all right. If that force had gotten to those other reactors
..."
VICTOR:
"Just one was enough for it's purpose."
KOENIG:
"Purpose?"
VICTOR:
"Some sort of creative evolution. A stage in its development. Perhaps the
beginnings. A birth."
KOENIG:
"A star?"
VICTOR:
"Something like that."
- Force of Life

HELENA:
"John. I'm sorry."
KOENIG:
"You were right. Totally right. If you'd done anything else I'd want to know why."
HELENA:
"But-"
KOENIG:

HAINES:

- Voyager's Return

KOENIG:
"They've gone."
HELENA:
"Do you think they gave themselves up?"
KOENIG:
"It's a nice thought, Helena. I don't think they had any choice."
- Alpha Child

HELENA (VO):
"The monster was more than any of us could believe. According to our criteria it
was never alive, so how could we be sure that it was dead? As we hurried back to
Alpha, before our Moon drifted beyond reach, we could only wonder about the
astronauts of those other fabulous ships. All we knew about them is their terrible
fate, the fate of Tony Cellini."
HELENA:
"John. If we ever do find a new place to live, and if we succeed, we're going to
need a whole new mythology."
KOENIG:
"Tony Cellini and the monster? No."
HELENA:
"Saint George and the dragon sounds pretty flat until you know the story."
KOENIG:
"The story is part of our history now, Helena. I think Tony would be very happy to
know he put new life into an old myth."
- Dragon's Domain
DAVID (on screen):
"Nice to see your face again, Eagle One. What happened?"
ALAN:
"Remind me to tell you sometime."
"If the same thing happened on Alpha would you have chosen differently?"
KOENIG:
"Remind me to tell you sometime."
- Mission of The Darians

KOENIG:
"Everything is everything else, and the whole Universe is living thought."
- Black Sun

KOENIG:
"Every star is just a cell, in the brain of the Universe."
- Black Sun

KOENIG (turns back to Helena & Victor):

"We've brought a dead planet back to life. Maybe we should have stayed."
- Guardian of Piri

VICTOR:
"Well. We're lucky we survived."
KOENIG:
"It was our fault. We unleashed him."
HELENA:
"We meddled. We interfered with another people's justice. We must learn to leave
some things alone."
VICTOR:
"Of course he could have given us immortality."
KOENIG:
"No. The price was too high."
- End of Eternity

HELENA:
"Under the skin, do you think we've changed that much in forty thousand years?"
VICTOR:
"Do you think we ever will?"
KOENIG:
"Maybe. Just maybe. I'll let you know in forty thousand years."
- The Full Circle

HELENA:
"It's over."
SANDRA:
"We are in different space."
ALAN:
"I wonder if the others made it. If they survived."
KOENIG:
"Did they ever really exist?"
- Another Time, Another Place
KOENIG:
"A lonely, blind creature looking for his death."
- The Infernal Machine

VICTOR:
"Perhaps knowledge isn't the answer after all."
KOENIG:
"Then what is?"
- Ring Around The Moon

RAAN:
"Although the experiment was a failure I did learn something from Earthman after
all. So did Vana."
KOENIG:
"Perhaps Vana was the true reason you brought me here."
RAAN:
"Perhaps it was. Please take my gratitude with you."
KOENIG:
"I'll be taking much more."
RAAN:
"Something you learned, I hope?"
KOENIG:
"Not exactly. But I still believe it's more important to feel than to think."
- The Missing Link

KOENIG:
"Every death on this base is personal to me, Helena. But Mateo...I feel his just
that little bit more."
- The Troubled Spirit

KOENIG:
"I just can't get it out of my mind. I mean life after death, maybe, maybe not. But
to be haunted by your own ghost, even before you die... What's that all about?"
HELENA:
"Life and death. Still the big questions. The greatest mysteries."
- The Troubled Spirit

KOENIG (VO narration):

"And so the circle was complete. The seeds from Earth, so carefully stored and
nurtured by us, had returned to their place of origin. I believe it is futile to
seek answers to the incredible things that happened on Arkadia. All we know is that
life has restarted there, and that for us, the creation myth of the first man and
woman has a new significance. Our immediate struggle is over. For Luke Ferro and
Anna Davis it has just begun. They have found their beginnings. We still wander the
emptiness of space seeking ours. We must keep faith and believe that for us, for
all of mankind, there is a purpose."
- The Testament of Arkadia

KOENIG:
"We're all aliens. Until we get to know one another."
- The Metamorph
KOENIG:
"There are things more precious than safety. Loyalty is better than logic. Hope is
better than despair. And creation is better than destruction. I just wanted to tell
you that, you seekers of perfection."
- The AB Chrysalis

KOENIG:
"It's better to live as your own man than as a fool in someone else's dream."
- The Bringers of Wonder, Part 2
