AC 2.1 Describe THREE stereotypes outlining positive and negative factors of each.

Stereotype 1: All blondes are dumb.

The belief that all blonde people are ‘dumb’ or ‘stupid.’

Positive factors:

It’ll make blonde people who succeed feel more powerful and proud of themselves as they have broken the
 stigma that they cannot succeed due to being unintelligent.

Negative factors:

It makes blonde people feel less confident in themselves, before they even try, as there is a stigma trying to
already tear them down. It also might stop them from even trying to succeed at something, due to the fear
of messing something up and then believing themselves the stereotype is real and they are unintelligent.

Stereotype 2: Old people do not know how to use technology.

The belief that old people do not know how to use technology.

Positive factors:

It’ll make the older people who are tech savvy, and enjoy and use technology feel really confident and proud
of themselves, as they have broken the stereotype

Negative factors:

It’ll make older people believe technology is not for their generation and it’s almost expected that they
shouldn’t know how to use it, and it tries to force the concept that they shouldn’t use it onto them before
they even try. It makes them feel excluded and hurt, especially when they see their grandchildren using it
and want to join in, so they can bond with them.

Stereotype 3: Immigrants steal jobs.

The belief that all immigrants come into ‘your’ country with the aim of stealing jobs.

Positive factors:

It forces the people of the country to work harder to prove themselves when trying to get a job, when there
is more competition. Not only forcing them to work harder, but also forcing them to achieve new skills to
stand out, that all the immigrants may already have. It’ll only make the locals work harder.

Negative factors:

It forces the perception that these individuals come into the country to ‘steal’ jobs, whenever all they want
to do is get a house, or a place to stay, get a job to feed their families and keep up with bills. It also provides
the people of the country to act out against them and evokes lots of unnecessary racism.
