Contrasting and Comparing Presenters.

Today I will be contrasting and comparing presenters. I have selected Keith

Lemon and Graham Norton. While both of these men have the exact same
roles, which are being a comedy chat show host…in my opinion one does it
better than the other. Keith Lemon is high energy, joyful and he forces a lot of
his edgy, sexual humour so that his guests can laugh. While guests laugh and
seem to be enjoying it, Graham Norton achieves this in a much more natural
way. Graham Norton is high energy, but is restrictive on when to use it, he is
very joyful but doesn’t force his humour onto any of his guests. He sits back
and allows his guests to take over with their own humour and he bounces off
what they lay out on the table and works with it. This way the show is so much
for genuine and real, making Graham comfortable, the guests comfortable and
also the audience.
In terms of visual presentation on how they both dress, Keith chooses loud
obnoxious bright colours that go along with his over the top character. On the
other hand, Graham Norton wears quite dull colours, with a pop of colour. This
is a perfect reflection of his interview style. He sits back and restricts himself
(the dull colours) and then adds to the conversations at different relevant
fitting moments. (the pop of colour) This is one of my favourite examples of
two men in the exact same job role, but carrying it out differently.

I will also be contrasting and comparing Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah. Both
women are chat show hosts and their time slots for showing on TV are very
close so it’s a competition to see who gets the views. They both interview
celebrities, but the difference is the level of professionalism and honesty. Ellen
is very forceful with her humour, and talks quite immaturely about serious
topics in front of celebrities, yet Oprah is not forceful and lays a question out
on the table and gives the option to the celebrity to answer and continue, or
move on. This way Oprah makes her guests so much more comfortable and
wiling to be vulnerable, which guests never are with Ellen, as the environment
set up by Ellen is almost too playful and joyful. Oprah takes her time with
serious topics and focuses on points the celebrity is willing to talk about also.
Ellen’s set is also very dominant, with her always on the same side, with a
singular chair and the guests far away on a sofa chair. This closes off the
connection between two humans and makes it quite awkward. Oprah on the
other hand sits on the same sofa the celebrity sits on, and is quite close to
them, to comfort them if needed.
These two women are very similar in many ways though, including how they
both talk about similar topics with celebrities, and that their sets are simplistic
and focus on them and the celebrity.
