Unit 37: Presentation Techniques for

Broadcasting

In this assignment I will be comparing and contrasting two

presenters and talking about them before explaining what
they do well in their jobs.

Hello, my name is Jessica O’Hara. Today I will be talking about

presenters and compare and contrast them with each other, to see
what their techniques and skills are when it comes to being a
presenter, and what makes them different from each other. This
won’t be a discouraging presentation, it will simply be an analysation
of two people who do the same job differently to fit their unique and
dependant styles.

Who will I be talking about? The show host Graham Norton of ‘The
Graham Norton Show’ and Russell Howard of ‘Russell Howard’s
Good News’.

Graham Norton is a Show Host of his TV Show called ‘The Graham

Norton Show’. The Genre of the show is comedy, as he always makes
jokes with his guests and the audience to get a laugh out of them. As
a host he interviews the guests that he brings in, talking about topics
that include those people as well the projects they’ve been recently
involved in. While he’s a laid-back type of show host, he always
presents himself in a very professional light. His attire usually
consists of a well-tailored suit; two-piece suit, shirt, tie and a pair of
slick shoes. While he’s talking and explaining stories in the show, he
often makes gestures with his body language which gives him more
of a personality and helps with making the audience enjoy
themselves through and through. Graham’s target audience is more
aimed at adults as there are often inappropriate references for jokes
or the topic itself, as well as the fact that the show airs late at night.
He always talks quite formally to the audience as if he’s informing
them of lots of important information.

Russell Howard is a comedian and a show-host for ‘Russell Howard’s

Good News’ and ‘The Russell Howard Hour’. The Genre of his shows
is comedy, although his audience is often late teens to mid-twenties
he does make lots of inappropriate jokes as well as using swear
words to emphasis his point, which in turn makes it much funnier for
the audience. On his show he often brings up things that happen in
the news or just jokes from the internet and makes fun of them, not
taking it seriously. Although, if it is about a serious topic he’ll make a
few jokes before taking it seriously. Mid-way through the videos he
has a special guest come onto the show but he doesn’t know who
they are and he has to guess who they are. He’s very informal with
his audience and treats them like he’s just talking to a group of his
friends, even with serious topics he tries to make them laugh. In the
show, he never sits down and is always using his arms to make
gestures with the jokes he makes. His attire is always casual, as if
he’s simply going to the shop or to have a chat with his friends. I feel
this is what he does to make it more relaxing for the audience and
much more relatable.

Personally, I feel that Russell and Graham are two quite different
presenters in their own aspects. While Russell focuses more on the
comedic aspect of the show, being closer to the audience and very
relatable, Graham has a more professional and ‘interview’ type of
format in order to make it more serious while also adding in jokes.
Graham is an older presenter so he may be used to older humour,
while Russell is younger and knows the type of jokes and
mannerisms that work well with today’s demographic. All in all,
they’re both good at their jobs and get the point across, they just do
it differently and work with different topics.
