Calvin And Hobbes, A History

(It’s really a background, I just wanted to use ‘A History’)

The characters of Calvin And Hobbes are all there for a reason, and here are some main ones
and their background.

Calvin

Calvin’s name came from a sixteenth-century theologian who believed in predestination. People
think he was based off of the author's son, or the author from when he was a kid but they’re
wrong. Calvin is based off of his adult life mainly. Calvin was used as ‘an outlet for his
immaturity’.

Hobbes

Hobbes was named after a seventeenth-century philosopher with a dim view of human nature
and is based off of the author's cat. Hobbes isn’t supposed to be a toy that comes to life for
Calvin, nor is he a product of his imagination. Hobbes is just a friend and sidekick for Calvin.

Calvin’s Parents
Calvin’s dad is slightly based off of the author's dad, as for Calvin's mom the strip mostly shows
her impatient side, but the author tried to hint at other aspects of her personality and her
interests by what she’s doing when Calvin barges in. I believe his parents are good ones, they
just seem to have a short temper when it comes to Calvin.
