Foreword
Together with the Information pack and the Placement Intake form, you need this form to
complete the Year 3 Self management programme. Together with the second year self
management activities, these activities represent 3 EC. They are awarded for successful
completion of the:
 2nd year self management components (one meeting with your study coach and the
Application training programme)
 3rd year self management components (two meetings with your study coach, and the
Thesis workshop)

You need to compete all the elements successfully before the three credits appear on Progress.

In preparation for the third year study coach meetings, you complete the attached form, and carry
out the test described in them. Mail this to your study coach at least two days before the meeting,
which you are responsible for arranging.

Many students spend (part of) the third year elective semester abroad, either at a Grand Tour site,
or as part of the Exchange programme. In this case, Appendix 2 should also be completed and
submitted. The first part is designed to be done before leaving the Netherlands; the second part
upon leaving the host country.

The 1st meeting of the third year (3.1) must be successfully completed at least six months before
you intend to go on placement. For a student on schedule, this is thus before the end of July
2015 at the latest.

You need to complete and submit Part A, B and C and, if you are studying outside the Netherlands
this year, the Study abroad reflection report (Appendix 2). If you will be studying outside the
Netherlands in the spring semester, you should make sure you have completed the 3.1 activities
before you leave.

The second meeting is designed to be held at the end of your third year studies, so either by end
of November 2015 or no later than two months before you intend to go on placement. Should
you still be studying in Leeuwarden for a fourth year, you can agree with your study coach to delay
the final meeting until during your final MEM module.

For this second meeting, you must submit completed Part D, E and F, plus, if you studied outside
the Netherlands this year, the Study abroad reflection report (Appendix 2). If you are going to be
away during the fall semester and do not otherwise need to return to Leeuwarden at the end of
your third year, you may mail your form to your study coach and arrange to hold the meeting by
Skype.

To summarise, the following items must be completed and mailed before the first meeting:
 Part A (Study progress since your 2nd year meeting)
 Part B Your current Curriculum Vitae
 Part C Career orientation

3
MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

 Section 1 of the Study Abroad Reflection report (only if you are spending time studying
abroad this year)
 Section 2 of the Study Abroad Reflection report (only if you are have spent time studying
abroad during the autumn semester)

And for the second meeting:

 Section 2 of the Study Abroad Reflection report (only if you have spent a (a part of) the
spring semester abroad this year)
 Part D (Study progress since your 3.1 meeting)
 Part E (Your updated Curriculum vitae)
 Part F (Personal review)

Please see your study coach if you have any questions. I wish you a successful continuation of your
third year.

Question 1
Analyse your study performances since the last meeting. Give your opinion on the following
aspects of the modules: your acquired knowledge, motivation and effort. If you failed a module,
then indicate on which component(s) you failed and which possibilities you see for passing (e.g.
re-sitting/do module again).

1a. The third module(s) of your second year = Media Relations

Passed / failed

Your analysis:
Media Analysis was an interesting module; I had a lot of fun with my module group and actually
learned a fair amount from them. The topic of organizational behaviour is something that interests
me and through the CBL cases I gained a lot of knowledge about the topic. Motivation lacked now
and then during the module, but I was able to pass.

1b. The fourth module(s) of your second year = Branding & Communication

Passed / failed?

Your analysis:
I found branding and communication a pretty though module. I lacked in motivation and had some
problems with my module assignment group, which caused the grades to be rather low. Also I
failed the statistics II exam, which is a mandatory element for passing the module. I was difficult at
some points to lift myself up and go to lectures and classes, resulting in a failure of the module. I
will have to repeat the module starting in November. I will then attend more classes and pay more
attention to motivate myself. Even though I may find certain things a little redundant I will make
sure to pass all elements this time.

1c. The first module of your third year = Media Productions

8
MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

Passed / failed?

Your analysis:
Media Productions was probably the most enjoyable and practical module yet. I had to organize
guest lecturers as operational assignment, which turned out to be trickier then initially thought.
For the project part of the module I had to investigate museums on their social media use. Both
elements were very practical and required me to use previously acquired knowledge.

1.d The second module of your third year = Strategic Management

Passed / failed? (if applicable, your prediction )

Your analysis:
The strategic module of the third year is much less practical compared to media production. This
took some getting used again, which especially in the beginning I found difficult. It was however
and rather fun and interesting knowledge, most CBL cases required me to think about knowledge
acquired in all the previous modules. This made me aware of where I still lacked knowledge.
Overall it was very useful to be able to combine all previous modules in doing the assignments and
CBL cases.

Question 2 – Progress Test

2a. What is the highest level you have currently scored in the Progress test? (please make bold
or underline)
1.2 – 2nd year level – 3.1 year level

2b. When did you gain that score?

October 2013

2c. Complete all the cells the table below (even if you have already passed the third year level).
Add as much detail as you wish. Refer to the analysis overviews which you should have collected
from your study coach. If you haven’t picked them all up, do so as soon as possible, so you can use
them for this reflection.

2d. If you haven’t yet passed the third year level, list below any actions you think would be good
to carry out in terms of preparing for and passing the Progress test.

Prior to the progress test I will have a run through previous progress tests and also over the course
of the module I will look over old PBL/CBL cases to freshen up some knowledge. I will have to
intensify my studying right up until the progress test itself.

Question 3 – actions required before you go on internship

You should, by now, have already attended the compulsory presentation about the industrial
placement, given each module period by Sylvia van Oosten. Should this not be the case, you
should contact the Placement Office for details as to when the next presentation is held.

You should also have found and studied the Graduation manual on the Placement Office
Blackboard course.

3a. In the table below, make an inventory of what you must do before you go on your
internship. Include all currently incomplete aspects of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year MEM curriculum.
Refer to your Progress overview if necessary.

Arrangements which still need to be made should also be included. An example is given in the first
row.

MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

3b. how you wish to combine your placement and thesis (10 months/7+3/3+7/3.5+3 in the
case of an exemption) and why?
I hope to first start up and finish my thesis before being placed in the industry. The idea of having
finished the thesis before the internship rather satisfies me and as I do not want to delay things
much more I will want to have this done as soon as possible.

3c. when you hope to start (N.B. this must be at the start of a Stenden module period)?
At the end of module for in 2016 or at the start of module one (2016/2017)

3d. when you hope to graduate?

I hope to graduate at the end of the 2016/2017 school year.

3e. the sector(s) of the media industry and/or the type of position you would like?
I have not done sufficient research into what position I would like. But an internship in for example
Dutch television highly attracts me, for programs such as; RamBam, Keuringsdienst van Waarde or
De Rekenkamer.

3f. preferences you may have regarding location (city/region/country)?

I have no real preference regarding location. If it is for Dutch television Hilversum would be the
place. But if I happen to go somewhere else I would not mind going there either.

3g. specific companies/organisations which you would like to apply to (indicate if you already
have some contacts with these)?
Blazhoffski productions would be the organization to go to for the aforementioned tv formats. I do
have some relatives that know some people working there but till now I have not had contact with
them.

3h. any other concerns/questions you have at this time?

No real concerns yet, just that it will still take a while for me to be able to do the internship

Question 4 – Financial matters

Looking at your present situation will you have enough time and study grant?
Yes

What will you do should there be any problems?

12
MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

I am fortunate enough that be able to resolve these matter with my parents

Part C The Career-Anchor test

Instructions
Complete the test (Appendix 1) and fill in the average results below.

1. technical/functional : 4.4
2. management : 6.4
3. autonomy/independence : 6.8
4. certainty/stability (job) : 6.3
5. certainty/stability (geo) : 2.3
6. dedication/service provision : 7.8
7. real challenge : 5.6
8. integration lifestyle : 6.8
9. entrepreneurship : 5.4

Should the meaning of the career anchors not be totally clear then please read the questions on
the score form? You will then see which question belongs to which anchor.

Question 1a
Do you think the outcome of the test represents a true picture of you? Explain your answer.
The test comes close to my interests and disinterests. Its good to reflect on these point and see
how stand against it. For example stability geographical wise I don’t really mind where in the
world I’ll work.

Question 1b
Compare the results of the test with your internship preferences. Which aspects are the same
and which are different?
Some results come close and others are little different, although I think I still manage those. I
scored high on the service proposition which I think is need for working within television, also a
certain sense of autonomy and somewhat integrated into my lifestyle. What surprises me is the
rather low score on the challenges. I do like to take on challenges and working in the television
production industry I will surely come across difficult and less difficult challenges.

15
MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

Question 2 – SWOT analysis

Make an analysis of your strong and weak points and state which points you will try and
improve during your internship. In addition, describe how you intend to make these
improvements (give concrete examples). Keywords here are: characteristics, motivation, effort,
stamina, flexibility, stress resistance, independence, initiative, teamworker, conflict management,
social, communicative and management skills, problem solving ability, and creativity.

Appendix 1 Career Orientation Test

Introduction to the test

The first thing you should do to find your career anchors is to determine, in general terms, what is
important for you and what you are looking for in your internship/career. In other words, what is
your ‘career orientation’. The check list is designed to help you analyse this. Do not confuse your
actual career-anchor with the values of the check list, as an anchor is a much wider concept which
includes reflection on skills and talents.

Think of the criteria that, over the past few years, played in role in your decision-making process
with respect to choice of school, changes in school/job, company or organisation, etc. Think about
the various criteria that you find important for future career decsions. The questions in the
checklist have been formulated in such a way so as to help you recognise these criteria.

If you notice that your present or future criteria are different from those in the past, then answer
the questions in terms of the present or the future. The point is that you should understand how
you see these criteria and how they influence future career decisions, even though some
statements in the questionnaire refer to situations from the past. There are no right or wrong
answers, they are all important, so please be honest with yourself.

Circle the number for each critererium or statement that indicates how important or true it is or
was in career decisions.
It is best not to spend too much time filling out this list, and to answer the questions in one
session.

Appendix 2 Reflection Report on Study Period Abroad

For whom?

This report (in two parts) must be completed by any student who spends at least one module of
their third year studying outside the Netherlands, even if you are on exchange in your own
country. If you are not going to be studying outside the Netherlands during your third year, you
should ignore this appendix.

Introduction
Students who spend part of their studies abroad often motivate their decision by saying that they
want to learn more about the culture and language of their host country. Upon returning, they are
almost unanimous in their opinion that their most valuable learning experience resulted from the
fact that they learnt to survive and flourish in a completely different environment, with different
traditions, value systems, language, social customs and habits. Not only did they learn a lot about
their host country but also, on reflection, about themselves and their own cultural background.

This report is designed to help you make the most of this learning experience. It is an integral part
of your time abroad. Its main purpose is to structure your cultural insights and language.

Timeline
Section 1, the Pre-departure assignment, should be completed before you leave the Netherlands,
and must in all cases be handed in together with your 3.1 form.

Section 2, the Final reflection, should be done near the end of your stay in the host country, and
should again be added to the rest of the Self-management form in time for your 3.1 or 3.2
meeting.

Objectives
After completing this report, you will:
1. Be aware of the dimensions of your own culture.
2. Be able to reflect on and handle a wide variety of cultural differences between the host
country and your own, and have increased your intercultural competence / sensitivity.
3. have extended your active vocabulary of the host language.
4. have extended your active use of everyday expressions in the host language.
5. be able to evaluate your complete cultural learning experience.

Pre-departure assignment
If you haven’t yet gone abroad, carry the activities below out before departure. If you have
already returned, try to think back to before you left and complete it in retrospect.

Pre-departure activities
1. Remind yourself of the basic theories on cultural differences (e.g. Hofstede’s dimensions,
Hall’s Context theory, etc.). This was covered in, for example, modules O&P and Media
Relations. Alastair Wright’s lecture slides from these modules may remind you. Plenty of

22
MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

information about this can also be found in relevant books and websites on intercultural
communication. Identify what these theories suggest about your host culture and your
own.
2. Find a representative of your host country and hold a short interview, asking them about
perceived differences between their culture and yours (or Dutch culture).
3. Find at least two websites or other media products from your host country, and analyse
them for potential differences with your own culture.

Section 1 - Report to submit with 3.1 meeting form

Using at least 300 words, compare the cultures of the your host and your own country. Use graphs
and diagrams wherever helpful. Give examples of how you might expect to experience such
differences between the cultures. Include an answer to the question “What about me is typical of
my own culture, and what is different?”

Feel free to also include a comparison with other relevant cultures, such as Dutch culture, or the
nationalities of other students which you might meet. If your host country is the same as your own
country, you should compare it with the Netherlands.

During your study abroad

Get yourself a pocket-sized note book or make sure you have a digital equivalent in which you can
take notes at any time.

During the first few weeks you will be swimming in a sea of new impressions. At times it might
even feel like drowning! Use this period to note down as much as you can and to collect
information for your final review. Having your (digital) notebook with you at all times will facilitate
this considerably. Write down what you hear at once.
Language
Ask your friends and colleagues to correct any language errors you make in the local language (or
English, if applicable), and make notes of this. Write down any jargon you hear. In particular, make
notes of:
a. words new to you (translate them in the context they were used)
b. expressions new to you (translate them in the context they were used)
c. words and expressions that are used a lot
d. any grammar mistakes you may make which you have already learnt to correct.
e. how it feels to have to experience a foreign language regularly?

Culture
Make notes on what you see at the university, in the street, in the local media, in the pub, at the
bank, in shops and on public transport. Your first impressions are often the strongest. In particular,
make notes of:
a. what are you doing to get to know the local people and their culture?
b. what strikes you as different about the host culture compared to your own, as you
experience it? Describe any situations and differences as closely as you can.
c. try to relate the use of certain expressions and behaviour to the differences in the cultures.

23

d. have you experienced uncomfortable situations or misunderstandings? How did you solve
the “problem” ?
e. how do you experience the differences in culture? Is it enriching? Is it unsettling?

At the end of your stay in the host country

You should by now have plenty of notes, and you should be ready to evaluate your learning
experience. Start reflecting on what you have gained from the language, cultural, social and
personal points of view.

Section 2 - Final reflection

1. For each point above (under Language and Culture), give at least one good example you
recorded.
2. Looking back at your Pre-departure assignment (Section 1), draw conclusions as to how
accurate the theory is regarding differences between the cultures. For example, if the two cultures
have very different scores for Power Distance according to Hofstede, did your experiences support
this or not?
3. Finish off by listing any tips you would give others/yourself regarding spending time in a
new culture again in the future.

Question 1 – results of most recent modules

Give an analysis of your study performances since the last meeting? Give your opinion on the
following aspects of the modules: your acquired knowledge, motivation and effort. If you failed a
module, then indicate on which component(s) you failed and which possibilities you see for
passing (e.g. re-sitting/do module again).

If this period was spent abroad (Grand Tour or Exchange programme), you can keep the analysis
reasonably brief, but you should also complete Appendix 2 (both sections of the Study Abroad
Reflection Report) as fully as possible.

Your analysis:
I found the minor at TS at NHL a lot of fun and filled with new insight in regard to the media
industry. The curriculum at NHL is nothing compared to the one at Stenden, as a result it took me
a couple of weeks to adapt to this news system, with a lot more freedom and a different way of
showing the knowledge gained during the minor. Overall though, the minor was very interesting
and I feel like I learned a lot during that period. Both about the media environment as well as
managing a group of individuals and keeping them together as a team.

Question 3 – graduation plan

You should, by now, have already attended the compulsory presentation about the industrial
placement, given each module period by Sylvia van Oosten. Should this not be the case, you
should contact the Placement Office for details as to when the next presentation is held.

You should also have found and studied the Graduation Manual on the Placement Office
Blackboard course.

3a. Use the table below to make an inventory of all remaining activities which you must
complete before you can graduate. An example is given already.

I am not entirely sure yet which of these tracks I will follow. I have the option to choose between
10 months or 7+3 month period. I discussed with my company I can make this decision as I work
there, because it is difficult to say there will be a good issue to study for my thesis.

3c. when you hope to start (N.B. this must be at the start of a Stenden module period)?

have some contacts with these)?
Homemade productions
Kemna

3h. any other concerns/questions you have at this time?

Not being able to do the internship (I already discussed the matter with Sylvia van Oosten as well)

Placement application status

The Foundation year and the second year of study must have been completed successfully. You
can start the placement if you have all 180 required ECs from the first, second and third year
visible in Progress.

The only exceptions are that the credits for a third-year module (except Media Production) may be
missing, provided that you did follow the module; and that it is not a requirement that you have
passed the third year level of the Progress test. Naturally you will need to have completed these
components successfully in order to graduate.

Your study coach will give you one of the following during the self-management intake
appointment(s):
 Green light: if you fulfil all the conditions then you are allowed to apply for a placement;

31
MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

 Red light: you do not (yet) fulfil all the requirements for the placement. You can only apply for
your placement once you have received satisfactory results.

3i. What colour ‘light’ should your study coach give you now, in your opinion? Justify your
choice.
I believe a green light, as I really want to continue and finish my studies regardless of missing ECs, I am
highly motivated to do anything needed in order to get approval for the placement and continue the
last leg of my studies

3j. If you still have a red light, what specific actions are needed to convert that to a green
light?
Obtain the appropriate ECs.

Question 4 – financial aspects

Looking at your present situation will you have enough time and study grant?
I do believe I have enough to and study grant as it stands right now.

What will you do should there be any problems?

COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE! With the appropriate people through the

appropriate channels.

Part F Personal Review

The preparation for the final meeting (3.2) consists of the completed Part D and E above, plus
writing a Personal review (PR).

The Personal Review is a review of your past 3 years in MEM. The objective of the review is to reflect
on the development you have gone through over the past few years and to think about your future.

Give yourself enough preparation time so that you will get good insight into what you have done
during your time in MEM. You will talk with people near you about yourself and you should start
doing this in plenty of time so that you will have time to reflect on the conversations before you
incorporate these into your PR.

The Personal Review

Having spent three years studying MEM you are now faced with new challenges and changes: your
studies are coming to an end, the industry awaits you and you want to know what you are worth.
On the other hand, you have to have a good look around and discover what suits you in terms of
preferences, interests and personality in the labour market.

Your internship year is a stage between theory and the industry. Although you are working during
your internship you should still consider yourself as a learner. As a stepping-stone to your internship
and your future job, you use your PR to look back to the time when you started studying MEM, you
look at the present and you look towards the future. The focus is on development of knowledge,
general management skills, attitude, personality, standards and values, as well as any potential you
may have for further growth and development.

1. Preparatory research
Pose the questions below to people who know you very well (parents, friends, teachers, colleagues).
It is useful to find out how people see you and how they assess you in your various roles. This can be
very confrontational, but also fascinating. Try to have really open and honest conversations with
people. You do not have to agree with them, but listen to what they have to say. You are after
interesting information for yourself. Make a note of all interesting and insightful comments made.

Questions to be put to a member of your family:

 Give at least one strong and one weak point for this student.
 To what extent has the student changed over the past few years in respect of attitude, social
skills, openness, tact, service provision, hospitality, flexibility and expertise?
 What suggestions do you have for the student for further growth?

Questions to be put to a friend:

 Give at least one strong and one weak point for this student.
 Describe the student in terms of personality and social skills, group behaviour, involvement,
ability to reflect on career.
 What suggestions do you have for the student for further growth?

Questions to be put to a fellow student:

35
MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

 Give at least one strong and one weak point for this student.
 Describe the student in terms of: cooperation, leadership, ability to focus on tasks, loyalty,
influencing the atmosphere, feeling of responsibility.
 What suggestions do you have for the student for further growth?

Questions to be put to a colleague:

 Give at least one strong and one weak point for this student.
 Describe the student in terms of: team work, focus on tasks, dealing with customers,
flexibility, feeling of responsibility, expertise, professional attitude, dealing with superiors
and subordinates, team spirit and leading.
 What suggestions do you have for the student for further growth?

You could also re-read the answers you have given to the various questions in the evaluation forms
over the years.

2. Content

Structure the body of your personal review as follows:

a. The Past; who was I when I first came to study MEM?

b. The Present; who am I at this moment after 3 years of MEM?
c. The Future; who and what do I want to be in the future?

These questions must be dealt with as follows. You give a description of the past and now in respect
to level of knowledge, personal skills and qualities, personality, attitude, standards and values; you
take a picture of yourself, as it were. This is the stage of concrete observations. Back up your
analysis with quotes from all four respondents who you interviewed during the preparatory phase
above, giving the source in each case.

Next, you compare the past and present pictures and you determine and describe the background,
causes and connections that lead to a second picture. This is the stage of analysis. Once again, make
use of quotes made by your respondents.

Finally, you describe how you see yourself in approximately 3 years’ time (internship + two years
work/study experience). This is the third (virtual) picture. Compare pictures 2 and 3, and think how
you might get to picture 3 (remembering the process of growth between pictures 1 and 2). Describe
how you think you will realise this and why you are going this particular way. This is the stage of
looking ahead and planning how to deal with this.

In summary:
Photo 1: Description how and who you were when you came to study MEM.
Photo 2: Description of how and who you are now, with an analysis of the process of growth.
Photo 3: Description of how and who you will be in 3 years, looking ahead and planning.

36
MEM 3rd year Self-management form International Stream February 2013 students

For the conclusion, find or make three illustrations/images that represent the 3 moments you have
described. Explain why you have chosen these illustrations. Then round off with a general
conclusion, reflecting on a selection of the following:

 What did you do well/not so well and what would you have done differently looking back?
 To what extent did you push yourself over the past three years to achieve the maximum?
 What was missing in the programme that would have been important for your
development? Did you try and fill the gap yourself, if so what have you done, if not, why not?
 Which roles did MEM, student life, activities, events, certain people play with reference to
your personal development?
 What is important for you (values, standards), what used to be important for you? What
should be important for you in the future in your career/life?
 Which objectives do you have in your life, both private and business? How and when will you
achieve them?
 Which problems might present themselves before you achieve your objectives. How will you
deal with these?
 To what extent do you have an objective picture of yourself of what you know and what are
capable of doing?
 Analysing your strong and weak points, in which areas did you develop positively and which
areas still need more attention?
 What is the level of your general knowledge? Have you kept it up?
 What is your Unique Selling Point (USP)? How can you use this to your advantage?
 How satisfied are you with yourself?
 What is your opinion on the feedback or answers you got from people in the conversations
about you?

3. Formal Requirements

The Personal Review will be assessed positively if:

- It is written in correct English, with a minimum of disturbing errors
- The body consists of at least 3 A-4 pages in font 11, single space
- The past, present and future are clearly described, well-analysed, and contain a well-
founded look-ahead and a plan of approach.
- It is clear from the report that you have actually talked with other people.
- There is no unnecessary repetition.
- It is clear that the report is an individual effort.
