KATHLEEN ANNE A.

TAMBASEN 11 – SPICA

This quarter is not like the previous ones. During the first and second quarters, we were tasked
to create materials of our own imagination and handcraft but limited to a certain field—I
became part of teams who built a phone booth-shaped wooden lamp last October while an
acrylic sheet-based desk organizer was the focus of second quarter. However, third quarter
gave us a wider array of projects to choose from: admittedly, it is hard to pick a project which
has the sole constraint as to its functionality solving at least one of Philippine Science High
School – Cagayan Valley Campus’ problems.

Also, this is the first quarter that we are learning about Arduino. Actually, a lot of pressure was
put on me because I have zero knowledge regarding that programming language, and my
classmates seem to cope just fine. I think learning Arduino is a skill that should be learned by
Design and Make Technologies students but given that we are given the choice to pick a project
that is either programming-based or structural-based, I think the latter is more in my league.
Hence, our group decided to create a mounting apparatus for the grinder, in pursuit to help
promote worker safety in the Fabrication Laboratory of our school.

During consultations, we were congratulated by consultants because of our chosen project;

however, their minds contributed a lot to the betterment of our project. Upon suggesting other
mechanisms to help our project be more user-friendly and functional, our consultants helped
us in the ideation part of our project.

Challenges experienced by the group are insinuated by the fact that all of us are not residing in
the campus dormitories, I am the only one, actually. Sometimes, I am always late in being
informed on news regarding our project, but through the initiative of my other groupmates,
everything’s alright.

Also, it was sad that our prototype was trashed by the utility staff. Our efforts in bringing the
life of our ideas to life with the use of used carton was somehow wasted. But still, we’ll keep
pushing in order to do right by our project.

I am looking forward to continuing this project in the fourth quarter. I am looking forward to the
final wave of Design and Make Technologies.
