Structures to Survive!
Watch the movie about How living things Prepare for Winter and Survive the Cold

Based on the video you saw discuss what do animals do to survive in cold weather?

Let’s explore!
Of course, animals don't have clothes or blankets like we do, so they have to rely on their
thick fur and blubber to keep them warm.

Involve me and I will understand!

You need:
- Two containers filled with icy water.

- Glove or mitten.

Procedure
- Put one glove or mitten in one hand and leave the other without a glove.

- Then dip both hands into the icy water. Each hand in a bowl. 4
Page

You will notice right away the difference in temperature between the hand covered with a
thick glove and the hand that did not have a glove.
How much minutes will you be able to keep your hands in icy water?
Record your time for each hand and compare.

Winter is cold. There is snow on the ground. People live in warm houses. What do animals do?
Some animals sleep all winter. It is a very deep sleep called hibernation. They need little or no
food. Bears and chipmunks hibernate. So do frogs, snakes and even some bugs.
Why do animals hibernate? Follow the link to know why.

Other animals stay active in winter. It is hard for them to find food. They may live in holes in
trees or under the ground to stay warm. Deer, squirrels and rabbits stay active.

Some birds fly south for the winter. We call this migration. They go to a warmer place to find
food. Other birds stay here all winter. We can help by feeding them.
Follow the link below to know more about migration.

What are some structures that help animals survive?
Animals that adapt to the cold weather often change their appearance. They grow extra fur or
fat to keep them warm. Some animals change color to camouflage themselves with the snow.
These animals can find food in winter, even though there isn't much food around. Some animals
change what they eat to ensure they always find plenty of food!

Plants can adapt by:
Growing very close to the ground and having small leaves. This helps to conserve water and to
avoid damage by the wind.
Shedding leaves so less food is needed.

Read about the polar bear adaptations and answer the questions that follow.

POLAR BEAR adaptations

Polar bears have 2 types of fur:

- Thick woolly fur close to the skin

- Hollow clear colored guard hairs stick up and protect the bear from
getting wet.

Under the fur, polar bears have black skin which also help in keeping warm.
Wide large paws help a polar bear to walk. 9
Page

While swimming, it closes its nostrils so no water can get in.

Answer the questions:
1. Where do polar bears live?
____________________________________________________________

2. Why are they white?

_____________________________________________________________

3. How do they stay warm?

___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________

4. What helps polar bears

- Walk in the snow? __________________________________

- Get food? _________________________________________

5. Can a polar bear live in the desert? Why?

___________________________________________________________________________________

6. If a polar bear was adapted to live in a desert:

- What color would it have to blend with its environment?

____________________________________________________________

- Would it still need a thick fur and the layers of fat? Justify your answer.

- What would it eat? _____________________________________________________________

Math Objectives: Subtract whole numbers through 999 with and without regrouping

Subtraction without regrouping:

To subtract two-digit numbers in column, we place the greater number on top and the
smaller number directly below it, aligning the ones, tens and hundreds place values; we
subtract the ones first, then the tens, finally the hundreds.

Example:

When the digit in the ones place of the greater number is smaller than the ones place of the
smaller number, then one ten should be borrowed from the tens place of the greater
number. This is called subtraction with regrouping.

Subtraction with regrouping:
