SELECTION OF VALVE:

Generally there are of three types of vales –

1. on-off type
2. control valve
3. non-return valve

On-off type valve:

Example: gate valve,ball valve,plug valve

1. this type of valves have a positive seal at close position (leakage proof)
2. there is minimum resistance to flow when it is open.
3. Several turns of valve handle is required for gate valve to close the valve,so it is used
where infrequent use is required.
4. Ball and plug valve requires only a quarter turn of valve handle to open or close,so for
quick use, ball and plug valves are used.
5. On-off type valve should not be used in partially opened or partially closed form,it
affects the seal.

Control valve:

Example: globe valve,butter-fly valve,diaphragm valve

1. Globe valves are common.

2. Butter fly valves are best for gas and vapour flow.
3. Automatic control valves are usually globe valves.
4. Good flow control must be achieved while keeping the pressure drop as low as possible.

Non return valves:

Example: check valves

The swing type check valve depends on the gravity to close the valve,so,care must be taken
while loading or installing it.
SELECTION OF PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS:

The general types of pumps are given by:

1. Dynamic pumps (like centrifugal pump)

2. Positive displacement pumps(reciprocating and diaphrame pumps)

The following curve gives the general idea of selection of pumps or compressors:
