DESIGNING OF PRESSURE VESSEL

GIVEN DATA:

Vapour pressure of the inside fluid: 14.5kg/cm2

Material of construction of the vessel: CS to SA 516 Gr. 60

Corrosion allowance:0.003m

Temperature:25˚C

CALCULATION:

Allowable stress value of Carbon Steel SA 516 Gr. 60 obtained: 1470 kg/cm 2(from chart)

Now,

 Calculation of shell thickness:

At design condition,The governing equation to calculate the thickness of the shell is:

T=[P*R/{(S*E)-(0.6*P)}]+ CA

Where,
T=thickness of shell

P=design pressure including static head(vapour pressure of the fluid inside the vessel)

R=inside radius(2 m)

S=allowable stress at design temperature

E=joint efficiency(= 1,fully checked by Radiograph)

CA=corrosion allowance(=0.003m)

Therefore,

T=[(14.5 kg/cm2* 2m)/{(1470kg/cm*1)-(0.6*14.5kg/cm 2)}]+0.003m

T=0.022m

Or,T=22mm

 Calculation of formed ends:

As,
The design pressure of the vessel is less than 15 kg/cm2,Torispherical head is selected.
Now,
At design condition,the governing equation to calculate the thickness(T) of the head is:
T=[P*L*M/{(2*S*E)-(0.2*P)}] +CA+ TA
Where,
M=factor
M={3+(L/R)(1/2)}/4
L=Inside crown radius
(Inside crown radius= inside diameter of the shell
Therefore,
L=4m)
R=inside knuckle radius
(6% of the inside diameter of the shell=(0.06*4)m
Therefore,
R=0.24m)
TA=Thinning allowance(=0)

So,
M={3+(4/0.24)(1/2)}/4
=1.7706
Therefore,
T=[(14.4 kg/cm2*4m*1.7706)/{(2*1470kg/cm2*1)-(0.2*14.5kg/cm2)}]+0.003
=0.037m
Or,T=37mm
