System Overview

1.2 System Overview

The REF TEK 130-GPS/01 clock which is shown below, is
capable of providing both time and position information, seri-
ally, for host systems in the REF TEK 130 Series Data Acquisi-
tion System family.
Each 130-GPS/01 is a self-contained unit. The unit is designed
around the receiver module. The receiver board is based on
either the SiRF star I/LX™ chipset or Garmin unit. The antenna
is mounted on the inside top of the case and the whole unit is
situated so that the antenna has clear overhead exposure. A
single interface connector is located at one end of the case. The
130-GPS/01 can be powered by 12 VDC from the host system
and supplies the time and position information serially to the
host system together with a 1 Hertz pulse. The SiRF star
receiver board has a 5 VDC option as well.

Operating the 130-GPS/01 System

1.3 Operating the 130-GPS/01 System

This section provides general procedures for setting up and
operating the REF TEK 130-GPS/01 clock.

1.3.1 Setting up the System

Mount the GPS unit with an unobstructed view of the sky.

Notice that the direction arrow on the front of the 130-GPS/01
case (near the connector) needs to point up when the unit is
mounted. Dense wood and metal structures interfere with the
satellite signals. Heavy snow cover may also reduce the antenna
signal. Refer to the “GPS Mounting Procedure” on page 1-4.
If the unit is located near a radar installation or satellite equip-
ment, ensure that it is positioned outside the cone of transmis-
sion. For best results, locate the unit below and at least ten feet
away from any satellite communication equipment.
Connect the GPS clock to the host unit, any 130 series DAS,
using one of the standard REF TEK 130-8015 cables supplied
with the GPS unit, these cables are available in seven different
lengths (see drawing). Connectors at both ends are the same
(PTO7A12-8S).
The REF TEK 130-8015 GPS-to-DAS cable referred to above is
wired as follows:
GPS Connector to 130 - GPS/01 Connector Signal (w/
(PT07A12-8S) (PT07A12-8S) respect to GPS)
PIN A PIN A 1 Hz out
PIN B PIN B Ground
PIN C PIN C GPS_RX
PIN D PIN D Ground
PIN E PIN E GPS_TX
PIN F PIN F +12V DC in
PIN G PIN G Reset in
PIN H PIN H +5V DC in

No additional cables are needed to operate the GPS clock and

REF TEK 130. The user should consult applicable literature for
other host devices.

1-3
GPS Mounting Procedure

1.4 GPS Mounting Procedure

1.4.1 Recommend 130-GPS/01 mounting guidelines

The 130-GPS/01 can be permanently mounted using a U-bolt

fastener, temporarily mounted using tie-wraps, or place at
ground level in an unobstructed field of view.

No matter which mounting type is used the following guidelines

should be implemented for best possible satellite signal:
1. The 130-GPS/01 should be placed in the up right position,
which is indicated by the arrows on the front and back of
the unit.
2. Mount the GPS unit with the arrows facing up with an unob-
structed overhead view. Dense wood and metal structures
interfere with the satellite signals. Heavy snow cover may
also reduce the antenna signal.
3. A minimum of 15-degree line of sight from the horizon
should be kept at all times.
4. If the GPS unit is located near a radar installation or satel-
lite equipment, ensure that it is positioned outside the cone
of transmission. For best results, locate the unit below and
at least ten feet away from any satellite communication
equipment.

1.4.2 Recommended pole mounting steps

If the GPS unit is mounted on a pole suggested steps should be

taken to insure best possible signal.
1. The pole should not be made from metal because the metal
may interfere with the signal.
2. If a metal pole cannot be avoided then two pole-to-pole
adaptor brackets should be mounted a minimum of 12”
below the top. Then a PVC 1 ½ ” (2” Nominal O.D.) sched-
ule 40 plastic pipe can be mounted to the other end of
bracket.
3. The 130-GPS/01 should be mounted below the top of the
pole as shown in Figure 1 - 2 on page 1-5.

X
WARNING: DO NOT MOUNT the GPS at the top of a pole or antenna.
1-4 130-GPS Users Guide 130-TR-003-C
GPS Mounting Procedure

1.4.3 Permanent Mounting Procedure

The 130-GPS/01 may be permanently mounted on a (2” nom-

inal O.D.) plastic pole with a U-bolt. Failure to use a nonmetallic
pole may or may not result in a weak satellite signal.

In order to mount the GPS unit properly the following instruction

need to be used:

1. Reassemble the U-bolt by mating U-bolt with the plate and

then fasten nuts loosely with U-bolt and plate. Be sure the
U-bolt and plate assembly are able to wrap around top of
antenna pole.
2. With the U-bolt at the proper height secure the bolts tightly
but do not overtighten bolts to the point of bending the
plate or deforming the plastic antenna pole.
3. Next insert 130-GPS/01 onto the u-bolt and tighten bolts.

Figure 1 - 2 U-Bolt mounted GPS (View #1)

1-5
GPS Mounting Procedure

1.4.4 Temporary Mounting Procedure

The 130-GPS/01 may be mounted temporary using a tie-

wrap. As with all mounting procedures, it is highly recom-
mended that antenna pole be nonmetallic. A 130-GPS/01 should
not be mounted with the tie-wrap for longer then a 6-month
period because the plastic will break down and become brittle.

1. Loop tie-wrap through large mounting holes by threading

the tie-wrap through the back, then over the top of the
doom, and through the other mounting hole.
2. Locate the 130-GPS/01 at the top of PVC antenna pole and
cinch the tie until tight. To secure the tie-wrap tightly, pli-
ers may be used.
3. Cut remaining tie-wrap off but leave enough slack in case
the tie wrap needs to be tightened.
Non-Metal

Figure 1 - 3 Tie-wrap mounted GPS

1.4.5 Ground Placement of GPS Unit

The 130-GPS/01 can be place on the ground if there is an

unobstructed view of the sky. When placing the unit on the
ground make sure that the orientation arrow is pointing upward.
Also follow all reconditions.

RT548 GPS Interface Board

2.4.6 µ-blox™ Board and Antenna

The µ-blox™ receiver board (GPS-PS1E) is a twelve-channel

GPS, Standard Positioning Service (SPS) receiver boardset that
uses the C/A code on the L1 frequency carrier. The µ-blox™
board provides position accuracy of 5 meters LEP. The United
States Department of Defense reserves the right to implement
selective availability (SA) to reduce position accuracy to 21
meters LEP.
The antenna module receives GPS signals (using an internal
fixed-pattern antenna), amplifies them, and forwards them to
the receiver board over a coaxial antenna cable. The receiver
board computes position and velocity. The receiver board pro-
vides standard NMEA0183 messages to the 130 host over an RS-
232 communications port. From a cold start, the board re initial-
izes itself completely. To hasten the initialization process, the
board's non-volatile memory stores previously-collected satel-
lite information.
The receiver board tracks as many as twelve satellites. The
GPS-PS1E board automatically selects at least the best four and
up to the best twelve for computations. As the satellites move,
the receiver board automatically tracks new satellites, continu-
ing to select the best signals.
Upon power-up, the receiver board searches for signals from
satellites that it has calculated to be above the horizon. It bases
the calculation that determines satellite availability on the alma-
nac of satellite orbits, an estimate of the GPS unit's present
position (based on the units last calculated fix), and the current
time from the internal clock. If this information is reasonably
accurate the receiver board acquires available satellites very
rapidly.
The GPS-PS1E has very fast time to first fix (TTFF). Typical
acquisition times for the GPS in Hot Start (GPS off for less than
2 hours) is 2-6 seconds. Typical Cold Start times to acquisition
for the GPS-PS1E is still only 60 seconds.
In Push To Fix Mode the GPS may periodically wake itself for a
few seconds to update ephemeris and other data, so that when
it is returned to continuous power mode it will be able to lock
very quickly.

Section 3
Garmin 15H Module
This Section explains the newest REF TEK 130-GPS/01
which contains a Garmin 15H/L GPS module. For the RT 552
GPS time board technical reference see section “RT552 GPS
Interface Board” on page 3-32. A user should be familiar with
whatever REF TEK host system is in current use. Documents
for other REF TEK products are available on request.

3.1 Garmin Module Overview

The new REF TEK 130-GPS/01 clock, is capable of provid-
ing both time and position information, serially, for host sys-
tems in the REF TEK 130 Series Data Acquisition System
family.
Each 130-GPS/01 is a self-contained unit. The unit is
designed around the Garmin receiver module. The GPS-15H
receiver board is based on the Garmin chipset. The antenna
is mounted on the inside top of the case and the whole unit is
situated so that the antenna has clear overhead exposure. A
single interface connector is located at one end of the case.
The 130-GPS/01 can be powered by 12 VDC from the host
system and supplies the time and position information seri-
ally to the host system together with a 1 Hertz pulse.

3.3.5 Electronic Operations of the RT552

The 130-GPS/01 is run off +12 VDC. The 130-GPS/01 input

voltage should be between +10 and +15 Volts.
The Garmin™ receiver board (GPS-15H) is a twelve-channel
GPS, Standard Positioning Service (SPS) receiver module that
uses the C/A code on the L1 frequency carrier. The Garmin™
provides position accuracy of 5 meters LEP. The United States
Department of Defense reserves the right to implement selec-
tive availability (SA) to reduce position accuracy to 100 meters
LEP.
The receiver board tracks as many as twelve satellites. The
GPS-15H board automatically selects at least the best four and
up to the best twelve for computations. As the satellites move,
the receiver board automatically tracks new satellites, continu-
ing to select the best signals.
The GPS-15H has very fast time to first fix (TTFF). Typical
acquisition times for the GPS in Hot Start (GPS off for less than
2 hours) is 2-6 seconds. Typical Cold Start times to acquisition
for the GPS-15H is still only 45 seconds.
