Gateway Online Class

H E L LO !

Session Ten 28th May

Hello again to the Gateway Gang!

In this document I have a written instructions to accompany the video I made for this
weeks class. I used household items for all projects so hopefully you will have some/all of
the materials at hand!

This week there is only ONE PROJECT, but it has three elements which I would like you
incorporate into this larger scale project.

I hope you are all keeping well... I have missed you!

A self portrait with three elements
Overview: This project is inspired by my art practise. My objective with my artwork is to bare myself and my
vulnerabilities in my work so that people can find common ground with their own experiences. By putting myself
forward and revealing myself, I have found others keen to share similar stories of doubt, fear, and joy. It is this
sharing of experience that deeply interests me.

I do this through a combination of poetry and self portraiture painting.

This weeks challenge is to create one large artwork. Including three elements:

1. A self-portrait
2. Inclusion of a telling object
3. A poem
I swooped back around because I thought I saw you.
This is an example of my work. This project is about Even though. I'm fairly certain
That you have no idea who I am.
jealousy. The self portrait was drawn from a photo, and Nevertheless, I swooped back around

paint. The telling object is jam, which I had thrown on And that's when it hit me,
me during the photo shoot. As a deep breath caught sharp on the cusp on my throat.
That
I've never felt real jealousy before.
Not like this.

Not seething in the pit of my stomach,

Not beneath my skin.
As I picture her and you
And her and me In my bones,
my body and my bed.
I breath it. And as it sinks in I create it.It is persistent.
Like yeast it lingers and swells.

Jealousy.

Then, then the frustration begins.

Firstly in the front, but it spreads.
And I can feel myself loosing control.
Of this thin film.
And I can feel it.
Thought I still find it hard to confess,
to my nails trickling over the naked lines of my flesh.
And I pray.
Don't roll your bloody eyes at me

Jealousy.
Step ONE: Your Inspiration!
Materials needed : Your imagination!

What I would like you to do first is sit with how you are feeling. Think of something that you would like to convey about yourself to other people. This is very
open. You can pick a topic that is personal or you can pick a hobby or interest.

Once you have decided what the theme of your project is, think of how this theme makes you feel. Is there certain colours associated with it? Is there
objects which remind you of it?

I would like you to ask yourself lots of questions about your chosen theme and collect information about it. You can write this information down in a
notebook.

During this research phase, you should also think of what your telling object is going to be. This object is a symbol of your theme. It should help to convey
the theme behind your art work.

For example my object in my Jealousy project was Jam. I chose this as I do not like the colour red and I do not like the feeling of jealousy. It is also very
sticky and leaves a residue which I feel is also akin to Jealousy.
Writing a Poem
Materials needed : Pen and paper.

For the second part of this project, I would like you to write a poem on your theme. This poem can be as short or as long as you like, it can rhyme but it
also doesn't have too. You do not have to write this all in one go. Look back over the notes you took on your theme for inspiration.

One way you could start your poem is to make a word spinner using words related to your theme.
Self Portrait with Object
Materials needed : Open.

You will incorporate your object into your self portrait, will you be holding it? Is it placed behind you? In front of you? Did you use it as a pattern in the
background?

This will be your composition.

Now you should have a fleshed out idea of what your portrait will look like in your head, and you are ready to start your portrait.

You can either draw from a picture you have taken, or by looking in a mirror.

When beginning your drawing, place a few light guide lines on your page. These will help you keep your composition placed well on your page. Then
when you begin drawing your face, start from the bottom of your nose and work out.

This is quite a big project, so be sure to take your time! You can do this over a few days, and your ideas might evolve as you work and thats ok too!
THANK YOU!
Well Done!!
